Advice 11)

Well ... you seem to be communicating to me fine in English as we speak. But if things get difficult, you could always just find a decent editor to buff things up for you. Aside from that, there's not much else you can do. Writing in a language not native to you is challenging, and you haven't got any other options but to learn how to write the language better.

3996105 Well then I will try my best and at some point after planing will search for an editor ^^.
Thanks for the help, and this Survival Guide - Fallout: Equestria Edition.
It is awesome, informative and funny to read on the same time.
I look forward to read more, if you plan on writing more of it.

3996146

No problem! I'm glad you enjoyed the guide. I will add to this guide as time goes by, depending on if I notice reoccuring issues with FO:E stories that I feel I need to address, or someone brings to the table something they feel I should talk about in the guide. I also make small edits every now and then ... like for example I added a picture to Advice 9).

If you need any help with anything that doesn't involve editing, I can lend you a hoof. But midterms and paper turn in dates are approaching so I've been rather backed up lately ...

3996234 Thanks for the help.
and good luck with the midterms XD I should start learning to...... shit live will hit me hard in the face....

"chucklefuck who doesn't like FO:E"

Laughed so hard after reading that, if some chucklefuck knocked my FO:E without a reason, I will spam all their story's down and shit on them, against the Grammar commando, their can be no chucklefucks

I'm making a FO:E, even got Calamity in and going to use the fallout Wiki as a guideline, what can go wrong

unless some chucklefuck failed with writing the wiki, then my story is complete bullshit, but its still a good read when I've finished

isn't fallout equestria meant to be a mature topic, the amount i've seen with teen or below tags

its like wut 0.0, thats a sheltered life you lead

4016725

FO:E tends to be mature because of the topics involved, and because of the potential for horrible things to happen. Quite a few of the T-rated FO:E fics I've seen had violence which were questionably mature.

>Need to research things before you write it.

Soooo you mean like how KKat researched the difference between a CLIP and a MAGAZINE??? (She didn't do that btw...) But no one noticed. Why? because when people write about something they don't understand for people who also don't understand, they don't notice! So if you plan to write about a nuclear engineer, you yourself don't need to be a nuclear engineer because A) you aren't writing a manual on how to make nukes, and B) most people won't notice. Just understand, if a nuclear engineer does read your fic, he or she will probably find it difficult to read... Kind of like how hard it is for me to ignore every time KKat uses 'clip' when she means Mag... I mean KKat's writing is PERFECT! :scootangel:

4067962

I noticed. And it irked me.

But, whatever, man. I'm all for writing realism (I wrote hard sci-fi prior to coming here), but do what you want to do.

4067966
Realism is important, but some things can be left vague. Like if you plan to make a makeshift bomb in the wastes, you probably shouldn't write out how to make a bomb. Its a Fimfic, not the anarchists cook book. However, things that are common knowledge or common 'specialized' knowledge (Things that a large group of people would know) should be researched.

3927476
Its also important for people not to aim for KKat's quality, but a higher quality.

>Shame on those who leave out FoE in the title.

Right, because Fallout Equestria is owned by KKat. Suck it Bethesda and Hasbro. Too bad no one can write a fic based in post apocalyptic Equestria without praising goddess KKat. Say you want to write a STALKER or Wasteland's fanfic... TOO BAD! "YOUR FIC BREAKS ALL KKAT CANNON! GARBAGE!"

FoE isn't an honor of a title. It's a forced label. It's people who seem to think KKat is god and that all her work is law that destroys creativity. Because if it's not based off her fic then its breaking the bs notion that her fic is cannon for post apocalyptic ponies.

That being said. I did enjoy FoE, Horizons, and I like the FoE universe KKat established. But I also realize how stupid it is to conciser a fanfic bad simply because it doesn't follow her FoE universe.

4068008

But I also realize how stupid it is to conciser a fanfic bad simply because it doesn't follow her FoE universe.

I don't think I ever said that.

Its also important for people not to aim for KKat's quality, but a higher quality.

I never said this either.

4068009
3925204

Kkat's Fallout: Equestria is Canon, by Law, and those who betray it (will likely) be flogged

Because if you don't, you'll likely see a huge audience backlash in your story, and quite possibly, a mob of infuriated FO:E purists marching outside your house.

you risk the chance of pissing off a ton of people - and incurring a huge red gash in your story's like/dislike bar (as an FO:E Purist myself, you'll likely find me amidst that angry mob, as well).

The quality thing was my own words.

4068008

FoE isn't an honor of a title. It's a forced label.

Why in God's name would you write a story set in the universe Kkat created, but not give it a name to reflect this?

Too bad no one can write a fic based in post apocalyptic Equestria without praising goddess KKat.

There's a difference between a Fallout x MLP crossover, and Fallout: Equestria. The former of which has its own unique lore that cannot be found in Fallout x MLP crossover titles. That is the reason why I am stressing that, if you are going to write in this universe, you better damn well name your story after the story it's based off of.

If you think Fallout x MLP crossovers and FO:E are one and the same, then you are sorely mistakened, and I don't see why we're having this conversation because this is the wrong forum for that. This is an FO:E forum, not a Fallout x MLP crossover forum. You'll want to go here, if that's what you're looking for.

4068024

For all intents and purposes, the title of that post was for humor, and all the things in this thread are merely suggestions.

If you don't agree with them, that's just fine.

4068025

Oh, that other group is kinda cool. Thanks for the link.

4068032

No problem.

And just to be clear, for posterity:

FO:E and Fallout x MLP crossovers are not the same.

4068039
Fair enough. If it holds FoE in the title, it should have KKats cannon. But if it doesn't, it shouldn't be criticized for not holding to KKat's cannon. Hate to see a mob of angry purests looking for blood when some poor bloke just wanted to write a post apocalyptic mlp fic :raritywink:

4068048

. But if it doesn't, it shouldn't be criticized for not holding to KKat's cannon.

Exactly.

Sometimes, it is better to write your own crossover, rather than be subject to the expectations and nuanced rules of the raving accretion that is the FO:E fandom. If you write in this universe, you are expected to abide by its 'rules' - something not everyone is prepared for.

A great video guide on how to write fanfiction.

14) Getting views without throwing away your dignity
So how do you get views for your story? Many beg. Many self advertise. Both are frowned upon in any writing community (except Wattpad, because Wattpad is the bleeding asshole of online fiction - but that's a discussion for another time). Whenever I see a thread about someone advertising their own story, or begging for likes, views, favs, follows, I just do this:

And then I keep scrolling.

It's just annoying as fuck. Who do you think you are, believing that your story deserves the attention you think it does without having to work for it? Okay, granted, some authors hit the right nerve in the fanbase and get instantly bumped to beast-status, but everyone else - including you needs to work to get people's attention. This is even harder for us, since we write FO:E fiction, because most people either just keep scrolling when they see a generic FO:E title on the front page, or they just outright downvote it because they're dicks (or maybe your story just looks like shit; see tip 1).) But whining aside. In order to get the attention you think your story needs, you can do several things:

* Make Yourself Known! The majority of the people you'll see reading your story will likely be people who are already part of the FO:E group, or a member of one of the FO:E groups you posted your story to. Thus, it is a good idea to be active in the forums here in the Fallout: Equestria group (or other related FO:E groups), the Fallout: Equestria Forums, or in the FO:E IRC chat. How do you do this, you might ask?

Post threads. Reply to threads. Help people (edit their stories, give them writing advice, draw porn art for them, etc). Chat with people. Read other people's stories. Comment on other people's stories. Just get out there and start making friends! You don't get views on your story by just sitting there doing nothing. Many of the popular authors here in the forums are active members of the FO:E community, either here on the forums or beyond. Even though you can't be friends with everyone, the chances of someone clicking on your profile and reading your story will be high the more regular you post, or the more you're around just being a great person! The more people who know about you, the more likely they are to read or spread word about your story. It's as simple as that.

But that doesn't mean I'm saying go out there and be an attention whore! NOBODY LIKES ATTENTION WHORES, especially like CypherSlash (who got banned, lululullu). Yes, some of us remember that mess ... but, anyways, just get out there and make friends. The point of this isn't to just be known. The point is to make friends and acquaintances on the site by doing everything I mentioned above.

* Contribute to the Wiki! Did you know FO:E and its expanded spinoff universe has a wiki dedicated to it? WELL YOU DO NOW. The Fallout: Equestria Wiki is unique in that anyone can edit it. You know, that's what they say about other Wikis, but the difference here is that you can make articles about your own story and headcanon. That was the most appealing thing I found out about the wiki when I first visited the site.

But why is any of this helpful? Well, my dear newby friend, the Wiki is basically a sandbox advertising platform for your story. Stories with well-written, illustrated, and numerous articles concerning it are usually the most popular. Why is that? Because every time your edit an article, it floats in the Recent Edits section on the top right of every page. This means that every time you edit one of your story's articles, it hangs out in front of everyone's faces for as long as nobody edits another article. And since article-writing/editing-related activity on the wiki is generally low, you might see your article just hanging out there for hours, days, maybe even a week! This means that people are more likely to click on it out of curiosity, read about your story, become interested, and actually read your story!

I can totally vouch for this, as the majority of the hits on my own story originate from the Wiki. I also have extensive documentation of the ins and outs of my story on the wiki, and I edit them heavily when a new Chapter runs out. So get out there, make an article about your story, then start writing articles about its characters, tech, factions, monsters, etc! You're bound to get a fuck ton of views from this.

Additionally, if you write beastly articles, you might even get your article featured on the homepage! OR you might even get your STORY featured on the homepage! This is, of course, all up to the mods on the Wiki, but ya know what? It's totally worth a shot. Write up some awesome looking articles, and you might just get featured. Featured stories tend to get a decent amount of views, too.

* Draw/Commission art for your story! Deviantart is also a great place to get noticed. Now, I can't say every piece of artwork on that site is representative of the quality of the stories they're based on, I can say that if it looks good then people will become interested in your story. You see, if you can woo them with sexy pony porn great artwork, and then mention your story in the description, they'll likely follow up and see if your story is as interesting as its related artwork is.

* Update regularly! Okay, this one is simple, and lots of people probably know this shit already. But here's something to think about: if you update your Chapter in parts, you get to spend more time on the front page here on Fimfiction. Oh, and if you're willing to risk a few driveby downvotes, you can also update during peak hours when the site's online user pop breaks 1500. This is usually around 4-7PM PST, I think. You can do some research by scrolling to the bottom of any page on FimFiction and recording the user count every two or three hours, and simply posting during the hour that consistently have the most users online.

* Be sure to post your stories in all the groups that it applies to! Posting your stories in the FO:E groups is a must! And do keep in mind the previous tip when posting, as adding your story to groups can have both positive and negative side effects on your story.

draw porn art for them

sexy pony porn great artwork

It seems I corrupted you more than expected...

Btw, can I make some publicy for people who want Fo:E artwork? please, great and powerful Admin...

4139533

I won't let you advertise commissions, but if they are requests, I'm okay with it.

4139663
Okay, nevermind (for the moment :pinkiecrazy:)

You can contact me on DA, people

After reading this I can see it's most helpful, regarding cover art I just opted for a very simplistic title it's nothing fancy but it displays what it's called and that for me at least does the job as I'm posting a story not art work though this is admittedly more my opinion, deviantart for fancy looking pictures and here for actual writing content being the focus. My only concern is I'm not the kind of author to update frequently maybe 2 weeks between each chapter at best but maybe more depending how stuck I am so assuming I had readers who are interested chances are by the time I finally update they have no interest anymore (not that I blame them).

4141234

Truly a bare bones approach.

My only concern is I'm not the kind of author to update frequently maybe 2 weeks between each chapter at best but maybe more depending how stuck I am so assuming I had readers who are interested chances are by the time I finally update they have no interest anymore (not that I blame them).

I gave your story a look over. I really think should take all that "I'm a newb at this" crap out of your story, clean up your story tags, and narrow down your description. Also, the whole "I hardly update" disclaimer, no matter how true, will turn people off from reading your story, so I advise you to get that out of there, too.

*Slow claps * Congrats me , I manged to fuck most of this up within 4 chapters or so I think . But Good guide . Defiantly worth the time to read (and possibly save whats left of my FOE story )

The people who made Fallout used this divergence to create a satirical, anachronistic, post-apocalyptic depiction of what the world would have looked like if there really was a nuclear war. Fallout's Divergence does not change any of the history prior to the Divergence point, since both the World Wars happened. Fallout: Equestria itself uses Divergence to deviate from, but not change, MLP:FIM's canon, somewhere between Season 2 and Season 3. You too, can use this to diverge, but not deviate from Fallout: Equestria's canon - however everything beyond the Divergence point will be changed. Diverging from FO:E canon or changing a canon event will have cascading effects in the long run, as you'll see in the next paragraph.

This is the type of divergence I am using for my story. Everything will be canon until "The Event" as I'll call it to avoid spoiling anything. From there on things will change, but it'll start off rather slowly as the main change will, for a time, be rather localised. But as the story goes on it'll become more pronounced, and with the Butterfly Effect in play the original story's "Post Event Time" canon will become exponentially more warped.

I've actually made it quite challenging for myself honestly, thanks to the Butterfly Effect I have to think about how even the smallest changes will effect the big picture, and on top of that I have to keep the canon characters true to themselves while creating events there is no canon analogue to compare with. As OOC Pip and Co would be a instant death sentence I imagine.

4188861 But I'm reading the Navy fic! :raritydespair:

And TV Tropes. :scootangel:

4188871 So, 300 by the end of the year, right? :moustache:

3925806
Just a stupid little thing.
Could you possibly mention any of these more low-profile artists? I like to give recognition to those who don't have it, not in terms of getting anything from them, but by acknowledging their skill and creativity.

4138331

That was the most appalling thing I found out about the wiki when I first visited the site.

I can't tell if you meant "appealing" there or not, as generally "appalling" is like, very bad, yet you're saying to use the wiki. :duck:

And yes, sexy pony porn is the best way to get noticed. :moustache:

4195211

Yeah, typed it out on my tablet, so I blame autocorrect.

4195427 The accursed autocorrect strikes again, eh?

I seem to be the only one who never has that problem. Then again I tend to spell things right the first time, or if I do mess up either it's close enough for autocorrect to fix or I fix it myself. It also helps I give my comments a once through pre-read as well. :twilightsheepish:

Also, thank you for replying, I've been looking for ways to procrastinate writing my story but all the forums are pretty dead (at least ones I have any interest in) and all my friends on Skype are offline.

So, let me procrastinate on you harder. :trollestia:

4195494

Get back to work, peasant!

4197359 Nu! :fluttershbad:

Though I did double my word count since there was no one to bug.

I hath went from one paragraph of a prologue to a whole two paragraphs.

Though I'm not satisfied with how they came out, but then again I never am with any of my other stories either, they were generally well received. But still, I dunno, they feel... off somehow. :applejackunsure:

can someone help me write a FOE: Enclave outcast. I have writers block and need helpo

4443598

Hello.

Have you read the entirety of this guide, and looked at the editor/pre-reader groups that I've got linked to in the Writer's Guide ?

Looking at your story ... it appears that everything about it needs a lot of work. Is English your first language?

yes i'm English can I have so help with editing

4443878

First of all, I didn't ask if you were English. I asked if the language English was the language you first learned to speak, growing up.

Second, can you take the time to respond in proper English? Not many people are going to want to invest in you their time if they have to teach you how to write English. Editors are here to wipe up crumbs, not clean the whole house for you.

Lastly, I can't help you edit your story, but I do want you to go to the Writer's Guide and check out the editor/pre-reader groups and look for an editor there. These forums aren't meant for editing/pre-reading help, so you won't find much help here.

15) Do I need to ask Kkat if I want to use her characters?

Since this question gets asked often, I figure I'd answer it here for future reference.

You don't have to, but you really should. Why? Because it's respectful and it's the right thing to do. You wouldn't want someone writing about your own OC, would you? You especially wouldn't want someone portraying your OC in a way you wouldn't (OOC). Besides, she might even be able to give you pointers on how to write Littlepip in a genuine fashion. The more accurate you can portray Kkat's characters, the better it'll look on paper.

Depicting the fandom's most beloved characters poorly is a surefire way to get your story put on everyone's shit list. Stories that fuck this up often get criticized to oblivion.

If you aren't going to write Littlepip or Kkat's other characters the way Kkat wrote them, you might as well not write them at all, because you're bound to piss a lot of people off.

I was considering writing an FO:E story and I ended up following a lot of the suggestions (rules?) as Interloper has them defined here without having much more than a few paragraphs written.

Not only is this well written and insightful, its a pretty entertaining read. Thanks so much!

4742671

They're suggestions, not rules.

Good luck with your story :twistnerd:

4742687 Thanks. After reading the suggestions I'm going to take a little more time and plan out a path for the story rather than write as I go. That should help me maintain a good posting schedule as well.

4742687 *read Advice number 14* Oh that's a major problem for me there because of two things... One I'm not an attention seeker although that's a good thing.

Two is probably my most reasonable I can get, I'm rather shy whenever I want to be a part of the conversation... Having friends to read and enjoy my fic would be amazing, but I'm a shy person (At least in the website) and I tend to over worry myself whenever I write fics spreading it to others. I get worried about the negative comments, the downvotes, almost everything negative kinda like Fluttershy... I tend to also lack the confidence to even spread the news about it because of my shyness. I get scared to death with doing something like this right now even though I'm partly confident in myself. Sharing my story is okay but as I said before, I'm very shy about it even if I did post in it the right area...
