Yeah, I think it works as a metaphor about half the time. The other half, I think it's kind of the opposite: people sailing around on a huge block of lead that should in no way float, yet somehow does.

I like to think it depends on the ship (the characters involved) and whether that one last supporter is actually at the helm or doing something else.
