I recently came across a series of vectors by osipush known as "Ponies of Flight and Magic", an alternate universe where "Heroes of Might and Magic" PC game and "MLP:FiM" were mixed together.

Emblem:

In this world there is a war between Nightmare Moon's League of Nightmares and Princess Celestia's Celestial Alliance, sort of like a fusion between the Crystal War and Nightmare Takeover Timelines.

League of Nightmares:

Leader: Nightmare Moon

Bio:
After Nightmare Moon's return Celestia tried to stop her, but their forces were equal in strength, so Nightmare Moon founded the 'League of Nightmares' in Castle of the two sisters and declared war on Equestria, her main goal is to DESTROY HER SISTER.

Rarity; the Warlock :

Bio:
Before Nightmare Moon's return Rarity was a fashion designer and seamstress in Ponyville, but Nightmare Moon lured her to the night side by offering fame and overall veneration. Their first target in the conquest of Equestria was Land of the Diamond Dogs, and by using her own diplomatic manipulations she soon became the mistress of the Diamond Dogs.

Rainbow Dash; the Assassin:

Bio:
Before Nightmare Moon's return Rainbow was the fastest Pegasus in Ponyville. Nightmare Moon eventually lured Rainbow to her side by promising to let her to join her Shadowbolts. Nightmare Moon soon created this organization of Pegasi-assassins to spy across Equestria. To help her better adapt to the night life Nightmare turned Rainbow Dash into the thestral.

Moonlight Raven; the Assassin:

Bio:
Moonlight and Sunshine Smiles were best friends before Nightmare Moon's return. But Nightmare quarreled them and set them against each other. Moonlight joined the ranks of Shadowbolts, troop of unicorns-assassins.

Moon Dancer; the Warlock:

Bio:
On that day, when Nightmare Moon returned, Moon Dancer organized the first party in her life. But Twilight, her best friend, did not come, so Moon Dancer harbored a massive grudge. Sensing this, Nightmare Moon offered to let her become her pupil. Moon Dancer wants to take revenge on Twilight as much as Nightmare Moon wants to take revenge on Celestia.

Celestial Alliance:

Leader: Princess Celestia

Bio:
After Nightmare Moon's return Celestia tried to stop her. But their forces were equal, Celestia was forced to make Canterlot the capital of her 'Celestial Alliance'. Celestia still believes that her sister can change her ways and they will someday be united as sisters again.

Twilight Sparkle; the Sorceress:

Bio:
Twilight is the most faithful student of Princess Celestia. Now her mission is to find a way to use the Elements of Harmony, but Twilight is not aware of the secret of the Elements themselves...

Applejack; the Knight:

Bio:
Before Nightmare Moon's return Applejack was a farmer-pony in Sweet Apple Acres, now this place became one of the states of Defense, where Applejack became the most skilled knight. She earned Princess Celestia's respect thanks to her honesty and self-sacrifice.

Spitfire; the Knight:

Bio:
During the war Celestia created a military unit called the 'Wonderbolts' in order to protect Equestria from aerial threats. Spitfire is the captain of this organization.

Sunshine Smiles; the Sorceress:

Bio:
Moonlight and Sunshine Smiles were best friends before Nightmare Moon's return. But Nightmare quarreled them and set them against each other. Sunshine joined the ranks of Canterlot Guardians, troop of unicorns-sorcerers.

Legion of Wildlife:

Leader: Discord

Bio:
The war between Celestia and Nightmare Moon had already lasted for 1 year. One day Discord, the god of chaos and destruction, awoke. He planned to subjugate Equestria, but upon seeing the war between the warring sisters, he decided to stay on the sidelines, he founded the 'Legion of Wildlife' within Ponyville and a half of Everfree Forest.

Fluttershy; the Druid:

Bio:
Fluttershy was one of the most peaceful and quiet ponies in Equestria. She lived in a detached house, looking after animals, because it is her talent. Even during the war of Celestia and Nightmare Moon, Fluttershy stood aside. But when Discord intervened in the war, Fluttershy had to join. Seeing Fluttershy's talent of conversation with animals, Discord knew it would be could useful: now Fluttershy is a powerful druid, who is able to urge any animal on her side.

Pinkie Pie; the Ranger:

Bio:
Pinkie is the most unpredictable, illogical, funny and crazy party-pony in Equestria. During the war of Celestia and Nightmare Moon Pinkie Pie was a street buffoon in Ponyville. She cheered up ponies in those difficult times. But when Discord intervened into the war, Pinkie Pie was on his territory, so she had to join the ranks of forest rangers, but she does not complain.

Zecora; the Druid:

Bio:
Zecora is a single zebra who lives in the Everfree Forest. She knows all about herbs, potions and creatures of the forest, so Discord considered that this zebra is a very valuable warrior on his side.

Starlight Glimmer; the Ranger:

Bio:
Starlight is a talented unicorn who'd been studying magic for years, but she was unlucky with friendship. She thought that everypony should be equal, and it would be "real" friendship. When the war started she didn't want to join any side, but Discord's influence and power made her change her mind, she became a sylvan ranger who uses battle Chaos magic.

Cursed Union:

Leaders: King Sombra and Queen Chrysalis

Bio:
When the Crystal Empire returned and King Sombra returned with it. With nopony could stop it he easily conquered the empire. Later, he signed a contract with the Queen Chrysalis. And together they founded the 'Cursed Union'.

While the changelings are the basic units in the 'Cursed Union', most crystal ponies were turned into crystal ghosts and subordinated to the King, except for Hope. She was by his side voluntarily.

Trixie; the Necromancer:

Bio:
After a bad show that was damaged by the war of Celestia and Nightmare Moon, Trixie tried to find a way to strengthen her magic and avoid being killed during the war. Once she was on the territory of the Crystal Empire, and Chrysalis tried to eat her, but Sombra, seeing her evil potential, made her his student and gave her a part of his Dark Magic. To control it, Trixie had to learn necromancy.

Suri Polomare; the Death Knight:

Bio:
King Sombra tried to lure ponies to his side by promising power and glory, so Suri pledged her allegiance, and Sombra turned her into the Death Knight (deathless). And she turned her assistant Coco into the ghost to serve Suri forever.

Lightning Dust: The Death Knight:

Bio:
Lightning Dust was looking for glory all her life. She met Sombra when he was looking for ponies who could serve him. Lightning could spy from air, so Sombra turned her into the Death Knight.

Tribe from Tartarus:

Leader: Lord Tirek

Bio:
Along time ago Tirek was imprisoned in Tartarus by Princess Celestia and Princess Luna. But with his ability to absorb other creatures' magic Tirek became the ruler of Tartarus, forcing all of the dangerous, evil and powerful creatures in Tartarus to obey him. His main purpose is to go back to Equestria and get revenge on the sisters before conquering Equestria.

Sunset Shimmer; the Heretic :

Bio:
Shortly before Twilight Sparkle, Sunset Shimmer was Princess Celestia's pupil. But she didn't get the desired result, so she made a deal with Lord Tirek, he didn't take away her magic, but strengthened it by turning her into succubus (she-demon).

Adagio Dazzle; the Heretic, Aria Blaze; Lord of Demons, and Sonata Dusk; Lord of Demons:

Bio:
The Dazzlings were frightening sirens, they could subjugate will of others ponies, but Starswirl the Bearded sent them to another dimension. However Tirek was able to summon them to Tartarus via powerful magic. He then turned them into ponies - succubi in exchange for their loyalty. They use their voices to control others and give him more pony servants, charmed by the Dazzlings.

Feels like there should be some divided family loyalties besides the Royal sisters... Twilight's family would be ideal. Her father has a crescent moon for a cutie mark, after all, and stars aren't usually associated with the daytime other than the sun, obviously. It could make a good star-crossed lovers story (no pun intended) if Shining and Cadance served different alliances, but were still in love with each other.

For the League of Nightmares:

Gilda the Griffon Assassin (Rainbow's best friend ; she has very little respect for any pony other than Rainbow or Nightmare Moon, so she has no qualms about working as an assassin)

Zecora the Paladin (you can make up something yourself if you need to as for Zecora's reasons for being a member of the alliance)

Shining Armor the Knight (come on; not only is he the Captain of Celestia's royal guard, but his little sister [one of the two ponies he cares about the most] is part of the alliance. OF COURSE he is going to be a member of the alliance)

Neutral (beings who are not members of either the League of Nightmares OR the Celestial Alliance. The most heroic ones are the ones that are trying to resolve the conflict without further violence. The least sympathetic are the ones that are trying to profit from both sides of the conflict. The "'middle ground'" neutrals are simply trying to keep out of the conflict entirely)

Cadance: The leader of the branch of the neutrals that are trying to resolve the conflict without further violence

Pinkie Pie the Bard (definitely part of the neutral branch that is trying to resolve the conflict without further violence)

Fluttershy the Cleric (I kind of like the idea of two of the Mane Six being part of Nightmare's forces, two being in Celestia's and two being on the neutral side [especially since Pinkie and Fluttershy would be the two most likely to try to find a non-violent solution to the conflict])

Trixie the Sorceress (basically just an entertainer trying to stay alive and make a living)

Starlight Glimmer the Sorceress (as powerful as Twilight, but doesn't like either side more than the other and is trying to keep the Our Town ponies out of the conflict entirely)

the Flim-Flam Brothers (basically a couple of greedy opportunists selling weapons to both sides)

Here are a couple of other possible members for the Cursed Union:

Flim and Flam the Weaponsmiths: Originally a pair of hustlers with exceptional mechanical skill, the Flim Flam Brothers tried to profit off the war by selling weapons to both the League of Nightmares AND the Celestial Alliance. Unfortunately when they were found out, they only barely escaped with their lives. While on the run, they ended up in the Crystal Empire, where they only survived because Sombra recognized their potential, offering them augmented abilities AND more money than they could spend in twenty years in exchange for their services. With their technological skills backing up Sombra and Chrysalis's magical ones, the Cursed Union is even more formidable.

Garble the Barbarian: A powerful, but dim AND mean teen dragon with an obsessive hatred of ponies, Garble tried his luck again both Celestia AND Nightmare Moon (though not both at the same time). He reasoned that, if he defeated the two most powerful ponies in Equestria in single combat, it would PROVE just how weak and pathetic ponies really are. Unfortunately for him, Celestia and Nightmare Moon BOTH curb stomped him when he tried to fight them and Garble only barely escaped with his life. When Garble met Sombra, the latter offered the former increased power AND a shot at revenge on BOTH the ponies who humiliated him in exchange for his absolute loyalty. Despite part of him hating the idea of taking orders from a pony, the offer of increased power AND the fact that Sombra seemed to hate Celestia and Nightmare Moon as much as HE did was JUST enough to trump his pride.

Lightning Dust the Assassin: Obsessed with being the very best there is, Lightning Dust started out as merely an extremely talented and driven, but also extremely arrogant athlete. Unfortunately, when one of her stunt shows got wrecked by a fight between members of the League of Nightmares and the Celestial Alliance, Lightning Dust developed a grudge against both sides of the conflict. This grudge kept getting stronger as time progressed, but it was this grudge that gave Sombra the opening he needed in getting Lightning Dust onto his side.

Plus another possible group.

Order of the Heart: This organization founded by Princess Cadance is a firm believer in the "'make love, not war'" policy. Truly neutral other than being on the side of good, the beings in the Order of the Heart provide equal medical attention to every side of the conflict and try to negotiate a lasting truce between all sides (Okay, admittedly the negotiations have been going unsuccessfully so far. Still, they DO get points for giving it an honest effort and not giving up easily).

Princess Cadance (leader): Torn between her two aunts in the war, Cadance opted to choose neither side and formed her own organization dedicated to finding a peaceful solution that would be beneficial to both sides. Of course, an already extremely difficult mission has become even tougher with the Legion of Wildlife AND the Cursed Union both entering the fray.

Shining Armor the Knight: Cadance's second-in-command and lover, Shining Armor is also the only member of the Order who is NOT a cleric. Shining Armor joined the Order NOT because of his feelings for Cadance (well, not ENTIRELY because of his feelings for Cadance anyway), but because he reasoned Cadance would need him more than Celestia and Twilight did (the Celestial Order is, at least, pretty evenly matched with the League of Nightmares, but Cadance had no warriors supporting her other than him). His experience with the Royal Guards and skill with force fields have proven very useful to the Order indeed.

Screwball I think would side with Discord.

And Starlight I think would feel more at home with the Changelings. Because, no cutiemarks and everypony looks the same But that's just my opinion.

I got a few ideas of my own.

The ‘Flaming Talons’

Leader: Dragon Lord Spike
During the war Spike was separated from Twilight. Lost and alone he wandered until he ended up near the Dragon lands… where tragedy has struck.

During his escape from Tartarus, Tirek had stolen the magic of the adult dragons and killed them all, leaving only the team dragons who barely managed to escape.

Hiding out in an island volcano, the group attempted to elect a new leader to lead them in the war, they immediately held the gauntlet of fire, which Spike managed to win. How are from the scepter ended up giving spike a surprising growth spurt, up to the point where he was slightly taller than Ember.

Now the leader of the dragon forces, Spike eventually came across the ruins of Griffinstone, which had been completely decimated during the war. However he discovered Gilda along with several surviving griffins who had started up a rebellion of their.

Each of them having a clear goal, The united their forces under the name the “Flaming Talons”

Warlord Gilda:
Holds the Griffin’s loyalty and respect due to her brutal nature, she secretly desires to rescue her old friend RD from the Nightmare forces.

Greta the Assassin:
Gilda's right hand griffoness. She has never failed to kill her target.

Gustaf the Knight:
A battle hardened warrior, he's known on the battlefield for strategizing on the fly and being able to get out of situations.

Ember the Knight:
Spike's second-in-command and field operative, genuinely respects Spike as a leaders

Mina the Mage:
Ember’s right-hand dragoness and specialist in ancient Dragon sorcery.

Garble the Knight/Fool:
Spike’s personal whipping boy. Desperately desires the throne for himself, and constantly schemes to usurp Spike, however he is seen as more of an annoyance than a threat.

Other possible members of the Flaming Talons:

Smolder the Rogue: One of the VERY few dragons other than himself that Garble shows ANY real respect for (mostly because she IS his little sister),she focuses on stealing needed supplies from the other factions (with the exception of the Celestial Alliance, which Dragon Lord Spike has declared "off-limits" [because of the loyalty he still has for Twilight, who is a member of the Celestial Alliance]) for the Flaming Talons.

Gabby the Medic/Scout: While mostly a good-natured sort who despises unnecessary violence, but LOVES helping others, Gabby acts as Spike's personal messenger (getting information from [and occasionally TO] the other factions) as well as helping out further by providing medical attention to the rest of the Flaming Talons as needed.

Gallus the Ranger: A tough, streetwise young griffon with a buried softer side (which comes out more often than he would like to admit), Gallus has befriended Smolder and has an unofficial brother/sister type relationship with Gabby. He works to protect both of them, as well as the rest of the Flaming Talons, to the best of his ability.
