This week we'll be doing poems. Prompt: Monster Theme: Hope Challenge: Write from the POV of a non-pony Genre: Any Rating: Everyone or Teen. Length: Any Deadline: 1st of November Prizes: Top three poems will have a reading Featured on this group
Also, to submit them, you can paste them in the comments below or comment a link.
Yah, it can be a comment. They don't have to be a thousand words, but since fimfiction doesn't support stories shorter than that, you could do it as a blog post or as a google doc and just put the link, or put the whole poem.
3733549 I'm sure something will happen between now and the first to put me into a dark brooding mood. I'll nail this contest when it happens (Or I could just stay up a few days straight on my homemade tea, that's when the creative juices really get flowing)
3733844 I'll start it with half of a poem I wrote for one of my stories, then end it with the other half. (This one will be a stanza or two longer, so it may be the penultimate stanza instead of the ultimate one)
Lucid is the dreamer who walks along the stream Following the wanderer among the many worlds Lucid is the dreamer who walks behind the seam Searching for the keeper of the lost and broken souls
Lucid is the dreamer who follows light on hoof Waking in the dragon realm where nothing knows of light Lucid is the dreamer who follows music's proof Hearing songs of welcome to the rhythm of the night
Lucid is the dreamer who walks where no stars gleam Traveling to places he could not reach while awake Lucid is the dreamer who walks within the dream All until the moment he is bitten by the snake
Lucid is the dreamer who follows him aloof Searching for her future with a fraction of her friends Lucid is the dreamer who follows like a doof Unbelieving one of them would meet her when it ends
(About two lucid dreamers, the original was about one named Lucid Arius. The second {in this version of the poem only, as the prophecy's supposed to be vague and inexplicable} is his sister, the main character Lumin Aria.)
Well, since I've never poetried before, that means I can't judge poetry. So I'll just have to make some poetry and enter it into the competition!
Challenge: Accepted. Genre: Slice of Life Rating: Everyone.
Griffin
Walking down the street shouldn't give reason for looks of abject horror. Though we griffins prefer strong willed ones, I'd be happy if these ponies were only demure. Thrown back to the street for merely trying to get a bite to eat... it's torture. Gilda said these ponies would let you take whatever you want, but now I'm unsure.
"Ponyville." How fitting. A town for ponies, no kidding. Of their slights, they claim to be unwitting. Oh, there'd be fights; come back home with me, and you'd see no pity.
But I mustn't think like that. I mustn't lose my head. I lie back, still starving, on the floor of my flat. And I feel as if I'm dead.
My time's not up though: I have days left before I can leave, and hours left in this day. And, "I moped on the floor," is not nothing that I would ever say with pride So I picked myself up, and exited the door. I would somehow enjoy my stay. And lo' and behold, another pink pony. And of course, we had to collide.
"Ghuaaaaa!" The pony gasped, as if I had broken something important to her. "You're a griffin! Are you new! You like Fondu? I gotta get back to Sugarcube's kitchen!" Poof! The pony vanished. I honestly wished she could have talked a little bit longer.
At least then, everything wouldn't feel so somber. At least she wouldn't have treated me like a monster.
But even with just that, something burned in my heart. With just that, this was a day I could start.
I walked through the town, with newfound hope. But still, the ponies behind the fruit stands guarded their produce from me. But I wasn't a loser, and I wouldn't just mope. I walked up to a stand, eyeing tomatoes, and ignored the owner shooting glares at me.
"How much for one of these," I asked. The owner tensed, and I tensed with him, anticipating another saying like "Go away, they're not for free." He looked behind me, so I glanced back. That Pink Pony was smiling and waving at me. The stand owner swallowed, and said, "Go ahead. The first one's on me."
I only bought one tomato.
With a snack to munch on, and a guardian angel, I felt so much safer walking the streets. So with less dragging steps, I walked past some apples, and made my way to a bench by the stream. The town bustled before me, the river flowed around me. Everything near me moved like a dream. If not for some ponies, this place would be great. But then one sea-green mare did the most amazing of feats.
A sea-green unicorn mare stared up at me, her head tilted, quizzically. "Hi." She smiled, then sat beside me. "Hi," I responded, then scooted to make more space free. "So," she started, "what's a griffin doing so far from Italy?"
At that, I couldn't help it, my heart filled up with glee. Somepony read up on their geography. And she was the second pony to act outright kindly to me. I was famous for my stories, and she had earned one for free. But my stories were long, so I asked her, "How long are you free?" She smiled, albeit sadly, at me. "I'm sorry: I've got a party to see."
I only had minutes, but I gave the best rendition I could. I told her of the time I bought some saddle arabian goods. It was a short one, but one filled with humor. In reply, she told me the most recent rumor.
"They say a monster's hiding in Ponyville."
Of the sights, I had more than my fill. I shook talons with Lyra, and I bid her farewell.
Walking back was hard in the night. But it was a task that was aided by the moon. My door was stuck, so I had to force it with my might. Inside, there were crowds of ponies and blinding lights. Was my death to come so soon?
"Surprise!" The pink pony threw streamers at me. "I saw that you were new, and if you were new, that meant you didn't know anypony..." The pony blathered incessantly. She meant well, but there was someone else I had to see. And there was the other one I knew, eating chocolate fondu. I walked up to the pony. Lyra grinned maniacally.
"So"—I grinned cheekily—"that party you had to see..." "It was for you!" Lyra smiled with unrestrained glee. "I guess I was wrong!" Pinkie laughed happily.
I gazed down the aisles of culinary delights, and knew it was time to lay down another story tonight. "So"—I smirked—"what kind of punch did you pick up for me?"
3734113 Contest entries have to be written for the contest! You can't just enter a poem you wrote for a completely unrelated fanfiction. If the second half is actually written for this contest, I'll allow it.
3738543 It's not, sorry. (Lumin Aria was going to find the other half of the poem in another Star Swirl the Bearded book... until I {almost, but not quite} entirely gave up writing for that story.)
Poetry Contest Entry. (Preceded by a reminder of the rules... here!)

The Falling of the Silence through the Sky, by Sky Blue CMC (Cleverly Masked Changeling, currently disguised as the Cutie Mark Crusader from Cloudsdale)
Narrated by Meteora, the Changeling who is currently disguised as Sky:
The falling of the silence through the sky Is something that is never found with darks. There always is a star who shines too high To have appeared within your Cutie Marks.
There always is a star who shines above, The other ones and that one is our queen, Who swallows hope by eating up your love, For all your little friends, and inbetween.
The darkness comes, and goes, consuming fear, For all of us, as we shall take away The other ponies, whom you all hold dear, And then depart, within a single day.
And this, my little ponies, is goodbye. The falling of the silence through the sky.
That, my little nonponies, was a sonnet. The very first one that Sky wrote (before I started disguising as her) was called Sonata's Sonnet, about the one Siren, who, as a Changeling, I didn't like. The nice one, Sonata Dusk. The real Sky's coltfriend, Flaming Thunder, would have been in love with Sonata if he hadn't met me disguised as Sky first!
Real Sky: (unaware that she was possessed, yet still aware that she {or Meteora, who looked like her? Sky couldn't tell} had written a poem.) Took me a while to get the commas right. Did I?
Eff you little monster How dare you fall through the sky Eff you little monster How dare you cry Eff you little monster How dare you fear those up high Eff you little monster How dare you wish to die
3757502 umm sorta yah. If you already wrote it and just forgot to submit it or something, then go ahead and submit it, but if you haven't written it yet, you should probably just sit out for this contest. we are going to have another poetry contest next month though so you can enter in that one
3762235 Okay every one wins. The end. (jk, I'm working on judging right now, I just don't really know how to decide how they are better than others. Right now I'm doing elimination and picking my least favorite ones and slowly narrowing it down) also, I gtg for now, but hopefully by the end of the day we'll have results. also I think I'll also do some simple art for the winners for a background for the reading so the stakes have been raised.
3762258 oh I'm almost done If you want to send in your rankings (That how I'm judging poetry) is average them in Also if you want to judge poetry in the future, let me know so I can participate
You know how I said there would be three winners? I lied And the winners are Bad dragon Unbridled Dolly Sky Blue Piquo pie (his poem is unpublished) anyway, the reading will happen soon, and ill feature the poems once they're all published
I actually thought I did pretty good with rhyming, complex patterns, and keeping a story at the same time. Was what I wrote not technically poetry? (I'm not exactly sure on the definition of poetry. What I wrote does match some definitions, but not others. What constitutes poetry?)
3764527 I would say its poetry. The main thing I din't like about your poem was it was a little to storyish. it wasn't as open ended but followed a narrative. there's nothing really wrong with that, its mostly just my personal preference. for now, the poetry judging system isn't really more than what I like. I'm working on coming up with a better system.
3765299 I still do like that way of writing poetry, just not as much as the other kind. really poetry is pretty subjective, so it might have won if someone else was judging. I really enjoyed it though. I wish I could make everyone a winner for this contest.

3733549 i'm in
3733549 I can't write a story in 8 days! (esp. not with the 2 Nightmare Night parties comin' up!)
3733719 It's not supposed to be a story, it's supposed to be a poem
Nevermind, just 1 party. (the other one got cancelled meaning I have more freetime! )
3733725 Of at least 1,000 words? I can't do that. Can it be a comment here? (That way it could be less words, which I can do...)
Yah, it can be a comment. They don't have to be a thousand words, but since fimfiction doesn't support stories shorter than that, you could do it as a blog post or as a google doc and just put the link, or put the whole poem.

3733549 It's just a simple little thing I wrote in a few minutes, but I like it.
Glowing Void
All alone,
In the dark,
See a light,
Shut eyes tight.
Feel the pain,
No one to help,
Shriek in fear,
No one's here.
Open my beak,
Spread my talons,
Flap my wings,
Cringe at the aches it brings.
Opened door,
Glowing outline,
Feel the love,
From somewhere above.
Know there's a chance,
And there always will be,
When you have a friend,
They'll be with you 'til the end.
They'll be there with you,
Here and now, there and then,
Forever and ever,
You'll be together.
I will not worry,
I will not fear,
My friend has come,
You are here.
Spikes poem to Twilight.
Guidance.
You held me tight , and helped me see.
That there is nothing in this world that can hurt me.
When you and I are side by side.
I feel no reason to crouch and hide.
You are my anchor and I your rock.
Together we can overcome any shock.
Even when my doubt in myself, threatens to spirit me away.
Your guidance, Your love will always keep me on the calming bay.
From the solitude of emptiness you delivered me.
Raised by your kindness, you allowed my soul to fly free.
Together we've been through it all, never have we swayed nor did we fall.
Thank you my friend for all you have done.
All in all, it has been fun.
3733549 Oh, yay! Poetry! Something I'm actually good at. I'm totally in.
3733549 It is done.
I hereby present my entry to the Monster poem contest from the POV of a non-pony.
False Messiah
3733549
I am, a monster
That gives you a fright
But I be patient
With all of my might…
I wish to you all
To understand me
To see who I am
See who I will be
I wish for a friend
Who knows who I am
And doesn’t just see
The monster that’s me.
For I am diff’rent,
Other than the rest
Odd, a distraction
That’s put to the test.
Yes, I am diff’rent,
But yet still the same
I am but human
I do have too, shame
You see a monster
Nopony sees me
Nopony hears me
Nopony feels me…
I am, a monster
I give you, a fright
You give me your scorn
Say, it’ll be allright
Then, there she is, she
Gives me the shivers
She looks with her stare
Finally sees me
She looks with her eyes,
Her heart and her soul
She feels my heartbeat
She’s the only soul
She looks up at me,
She smiles now and says
“Do not be afraid,
All is okay now.”
I smile back at her,
My eyes full of tears
Call me a pussy
But she wiped my fears
She is my friend, my
Light in the darkness
Hope isn’t lost yet
My dear Fluttershy…
I’m still a monster,
That gives you a fright
You still give me scorn,
But now it’s all right
For hope is not lost
Hope is to be found
It is out there, now
I will stay sound
For I have a friend,
Who doesn’t despise
Me, my dearest, my
Best friend Fluttershy

3733549 My brain died when I saw I had two days left.
3750585 poetry dosn't take that long.
and its sorta three days.
you can do it
3734099 good job on doing that
3756600 Yeah this week someone pissed me off instead, which kind of kills any poetic ability I have.
3756903
haha, you could have wrote something like "eff you you little monster"
wouldn't have been poetic, but it would have been damn funny
3757109
Eff you little monster
How dare you fall through the sky
Eff you little monster
How dare you cry
Eff you little monster
How dare you fear those up high
Eff you little monster
How dare you wish to die
Shit I was trying to make that funny.
Is it to late to turn something in?
3757502 umm sorta yah.
If you already wrote it and just forgot to submit it or something, then go ahead and submit it, but if you haven't written it yet, you should probably just sit out for this contest.
we are going to have another poetry contest next month though so you can enter in that one
3758018 Yay poetry! It one of the few things I'm good at, but my college schedule said screw you this past week.
3735144 My name is Griffin.
3759207
Congratulations.
lel I have no idea how to judge poetry
3760379
Wat!? Dangit! This is a crisis!
3762235
Okay every one wins. The end. (jk, I'm working on judging right now, I just don't really know how to decide how they are better than others. Right now I'm doing elimination and picking my least favorite ones and slowly narrowing it down)

3762850 If you're almost done, I think I'll sit out. I'll judge next time there's poetry though.
You know how I said there would be three winners?
I lied
And the winners are
Bad dragon
Unbridled Dolly
Sky Blue
Piquo pie (his poem is unpublished)
anyway, the reading will happen soon, and ill feature the poems once they're all published

3733549
So I found out why I couldn't post here. At some point I left the group
So I had submitted it via PM
Title: Why I will always love her.
Winding wild wind,
Scary, mean, dangerous.
Tumbling pain, violent hate.
Whirling seething fear.
Death, inevitable,
Painful.
Butter yellow pink,
Warm, soft, loving.
A shelter in a cool breeze,
A home for a butterfly.
When you’re small everything is a monster,
Everything wants to eat you,
Everything, except for her.
3763729
Wait, how did I do?
I actually thought I did pretty good with rhyming, complex patterns, and keeping a story at the same time. Was what I wrote not technically poetry? (I'm not exactly sure on the definition of poetry. What I wrote does match some definitions, but not others. What constitutes poetry?)
3764527

for now, the poetry judging system isn't really more than what I like. I'm working on coming up with a better system.
3765270
Ah. I see we have opposite tastes in poetry.
My favorite poetry thing was that thing in Reading Rainbow.
3765299
I still do like that way of writing poetry, just not as much as the other kind. really poetry is pretty subjective, so it might have won if someone else was judging. I really enjoyed it though. I wish I could make everyone a winner for this contest.
Well damn, the one contest I'd never have a problem with I missed by a long shot
