Pitfalls With Writing Long Stories as a New Writer · 6:36pm Oct 14th, 2022
Hello, this is mostly just me ranting. TL;DR is I'm going to finish Honorary Crusader, take a break and come back to revise the earlier chapters at some point after doing a few new projects. I'm planning on sticking to a one chapter per week schedule.
Well, I'm starting to understand why you shouldn't tackle long stories as one of your first stories... especially not your first one. I'm enjoying the process absolutely, however I'm already starting to feel like I need to revise the earlier chapters. Why? Well, something that should have been obvious before I started, something that I should have really thought about... is improvement. I already feel like the first couple chapters are a little jarring compared to the last chapter, and we're only four chapters in... oh boy, oh joy. It's jarring in the sense that I'm not happy with some of the scenes, and I'm also not satisfied with the writing in general. If I had instead started with several one shots I feel that a little bit of this could have been avoided, but here we are. To make matters not worse but certainly more hilarious, my original estimate of 25-30k words (ha) is starting to look more like... hmm, maybe 50k? I blame myself for tending to read longer stories as opposed to shorter ones because once I get hooked to something, I don't tend to want to stop anytime soon. This may explain why I felt the need to bite off more than I can chew.
Anyway, I'm not planning on doing the revisions anytime soon. Just had to get some stuff off my chest.
