Pascoite gets bored and reviews anime, vol. 68

I started way too many new shows this season. D: 15 of them, plus a few continuing ones. Now my evenings are too full. ;-; Anyway, only one real feature this time, a 2005-7 series, Emma—A Victorian Romance (oddly enough, it's a romance), but also one highly recommended short. Extras are two recently finished winter shows plus a couple of movies that just came out last week.

Pascoite gets bored and reviews anime, vol. 67

Spring season starts today, though that doesn't stock my reviews too much yet, since a lot of my favorites didn't end. Features this week are one that did just finish, A Sign of Affection, and a movie from 2021, Pompo: The Cinephile. Those and more, one also recently completed, and YouTube shorts, after the break.

Pascoite gets bored and reviews anime, vol. 66

Some winter shows will be ending in the next couple of weeks. It's been a good season, but still waiting to see if the ones I like are concluding or will get additional seasons. But the one and only featured item this week is... Sailor Moon, after the break, since the Crystal reboot just ended.

I don't typically like to have both featured items be movies, since that doesn't provide a lot of wall-clock time of entertainment, but such is my lot this week. Features are Nimona, from last year, and Penguin Highway, from 2018. Some other decent stuff as well, plus some more YouTube short films, after the break.

    Time for an interview

FiMFic user It Is All Hell asked me to do an interview, and I assume he's going to make a series out of these. In an interesting twist, he asked me to post it on my blog rather than have him post it on his. Assuming he does more interviews, I hope he'll post a compilation of links somewhere so that people who enjoyed reading one by

Pascoite gets bored and reviews anime, the currently in process stuff · 1:17am Oct 12th, 2022

Hello, Mousteketeers! I've got enough stuff for another blog, except nothing queued up that I liked enough to feature. Gonna have to cheat and cherry-pick some short things to watch that'll likely earn their way in. But for now I'll plow ahead with an interstitial blog on what I'm in the middle of watching, and there's a lot of it, after the break.

So, these fall into several categories. First, I'll go for: stuff I'm watching as it comes out new. I'm actually getting killed here. Between several of the summer shows running longer than the shorter 12-13 episode batches and having waited for the dubs to start on a couple of them, I have 3 that are still going on, plus I picked up even more than that of the fall shows. So I'm trying to carry twice as many of these as normal.

The Great Jahy Will Not Be Defeated! is a little more than halfway through now, since I didn't get around to it until the dub had started anyway. It's alright.

Mob Psycho 100 just started its third season. Good as ever.

Lupin III Part VI. Actually enjoying this significantly more than previous seasons, with one glaring exception. Airing on Toonami.

Do It Yourself! just started and is adorable so far.

Bocchi the Rock just started and is also adorable so far. And it hits really close to home about how introverts deal with other people.

Lycoris Recoil, the dub at least, should be a little more than halfway through now. Took totallynotabrony's recommendation on it and am glad I did.

Akiba Maid War just started, and like totallynotabrony, I thought it sounded like a forgettable fluff series, but it flouted his expectations, so it gave it a shot, and so far it's flouted mine as well.

Lucifer and the Biscuit Hammer just hit the halfway mark. It's okay, not as wacky as it sounded like it would be.

Yashahime... well, I'm cheating. S2 ended a while ago, but Toonami was slow to get it, so they're still airing, and it's just getting to the halfway point. I found it very amusing that one critic rated it as the worst anime of last year solely because of Sesshomaru and Rin having kids, which he took as meaning he'd been "grooming" her ever since she was introduced back in Inuyasha.

Housing Complex C is a Lovecraftian horror that references a number of his creations directly and even seems to be modeled on "The Shadow Over Innsmouth." I think it's only supposed to run for 4 episodes, meaning it's halfway through now.

Next category: completed shows I'm watching at my own pace.

Sailor Moon—when it originally aired, I missed parts of it, but I started from the beginning anyway. I won't bother with the movies again, but I'm through 2 of 5 seasons so far and pleasantly surprised at how well it's held up. The last bit of S2 was one of the parts I'd never seen, so glad to have that under my belt now.

Eureka 7. This one's a maybe. I reviewed the series already and liked it a lot, but there are two movies and a sequel. None of them rate very well, so I may skip them.

Slayers essentially has two continuities, one for the series and one for the movies and OVAs. I've already reviewed what I've seen, but I'm only about halfway through all of it. I like the series continuity much more.

Aria the Animation is like a warm hug. I love it. I finished it and its first two sequels and am currently in the middle of the fourth series. There's one more, then two movies, the newest of which hasn't shown up yet on the sites I inhabit.

Bai Yao Pu is one of the few Chinese shows I've watched. Through S1, and S2 is complete, but I can only seem to find half of it. Though it always has two-episode arcs, so maybe they're just packaged differently now and are twice as long? I need to look into that so I can go finish it.

Granbelm, kind of an interesting melding of the mecha and magical girl genres. Getting close to finishing it.

Third: shows I'm caught up on, but they haven't finished, so I'm waiting for more material to come out.

RWBY should have volume 8 coming out... sometime. They did just release a trailer. Still not sure if I'm going to pick up the Ice Queendom show, but probably. I'm current on the companion series RWBY Chibi, but have my doubts as to whether it'll continue.

Sailor Moon Crystal did essentially remakes of the original's first 3 seasons, but they did S4 as a pair of movies instead. I'm through all that, but waiting on the announced similar two-movie treatment of S5. Given that I never saw S5 of the original, I'll likely wait until I have to finish this.

Attack on Titan has no right to call this "the final season" when it airs over parts of three years, imo. In any case, waiting on the second half of that final season. I've seen the Junior High companion series as well.

Gridman seemed to be done. I liked it, and I liked its sequel Dynazenon even more. I went ahead and reviewed them since I thought it was over, but lo and behold, they've announced a Gridman Universe movie for next year.

Jojo's Bizarre Adventure announced Stone Ocean would start up again on Dec. 1, but we've heard that song before, as the previous batch was months later than promised.

Black Clover was airing on Toonami, and S4 is done. They announced a movie for next year to conclude it. Honestly, I haven't enjoyed this one that much. It's very formulaic, and the one character I found interesting got ruined a full season ago. But I'll finish it, OCD and all.

My Hero Academia also aired on Toonami, and they're through... S4 I think? 5? If they pick it back up again, I'll be happy, but if not, I don't know that I'll go tracking it down in my own. I haven't seen any of the movies.

Dr. Stone, another one on Toonami, finished out S2. A special and a third season are on the way. It's kind of hit or miss, but overall I like it.

Miraculous: Tales of Ladybug and Cat Noir. Rant time. This is a really cute show, and they never ended a season on a cliffhanger. I was always a season behind, so even if they did, I could just plow ahead and see it resolved. So of course the time I finally catch up, they do end on one. >:V Waiting on S5, and they've been approved through S7. They also started making some specials that were supposed to air every couple months, but there's been a big gap since the last one. Total, I think they planned to make 6 of them, and there are 2 so far, which I've seen.

Food Wars! is complete for the sub, but they're really slow making the dub. Yet another thing I watched on Toonami, waiting for them to get the final season dub. If they don't, I probably won't track it down. Haven't seen any of the OVAs.

Fire Force. Pretty good, and Toonami carried it through S2. Waiting on S3.

One Punch Man. I'd about given up on it continuing, but S3 was recently announced. Haven't seen any of the OVAs. Hopefully they can regain the greatness that was S1.

Shenmue the Animation is not a good show. I only watch it because it's on Toonami between two other shows I watch. S2 announced.

Fullmetal Alchemist and Spice and Wolf both announced anniversary projects, so waiting on those.

Vinland Saga. Saw this on Prime. S1 finished some time ago, but it didn't conclude, yet nothing about when we might see a S2. I don't like it that much, but my OCD won't let me not complete it.

Invincible, also on Prime. Pretty brutal superhero series, but see previous comment on Prime taking forever to do S2 of just about anything.

Dorohedoro is just strange, but it's definitely engaging. And hey, Netflix is proving that Prime isn't the only one to go strangely silent about when something might ever continue. I've also seen the companion series Ma no Omake.

Talentless Nana was about to be relegated to the last category way down there at the bottom, but land o' Goshen, they recently announced there would be a S2 after they finished a couple of projects ahead of it in line. Pretty good, looking forward to more.

Tokyo Revengers and its companion series Chibi Revengers have kind of an interesting time travel twist to the old gang warfare plot. Waiting on S2 and beginning to wonder if it'd ever happen, but I thought I saw recently that they would.

Hilda is a brilliant kids' series enjoyable at any age. Finished S1-2 and the special, waiting on S3.

Gwain Saga is a pretty typical fantasy series on YouTube. The creator had been making an episode about once per year, but after a gap of over 4 years now, it may be done, though he does still post other things. More impressive for the sheer work involved in the guy making this happen.

Otherside Picnic is a great spooky series. Waiting on S2, though a bit hard to find anything official on when it might happen, though some generalities about the plot direction apparently came out?

Jujutsu Kaisen was quite a ride. Waiting on S2. The prequel movie still hasn't turned up where I can watch it.

Princess Principal is a steampunk series that got named best anime of its year. I saw it and its picture drama companion series, but it didn't come to a conclusion. Then after a couple years, they announced a series of 6 short films to end it called Crown Handler. I've seen the first 2, though they should be out through 3 or 4 by now, even though the sites I use don't have them yet.

The Ancient Magus' Bride seemed to come to a slightly awkward conclusion, and there was a standalone OVA, but after a couple of years' break, a new OVA started. I still need to see part 3 of it, which my sites don't have, but then they announced another upcoming season recently.

BIRDIE WING: Golf Girls' Story makes golf an interesting cutthroat tool of choice for resolving mafia disputes, even as the standard professional/amateur golf world still exists. Waiting on S2.

Star Trek: Prodigy is much better than I feared it would be, though it does rely on trope-y characters. At least it skillfully explains away all the plot holes that immediately occurred to me upon reading the premise. Waiting on the second half of S1.

Owl House final season starts this weekend!

The Ghost and Molly McGee is in a break between seasons as well. Just okay for me, but I watch it with my son. The finale does have me wondering what's in store for next season, and could even serve as a solid series finale.

Fourth: ones I had been caught up on, but new stuff has started, maybe not even recently.

gen:LOCK aired its first season on Toonami, so it's strange that they not only put S2 as subscription only on their site, but S1 as well. This after there was serious doubt a second season would ever be made. But it's out, and I plan to see it.

Ghost in the Shell has a few movies I never saw, but it turns out they're just recuts on existing material I have seen, so I won't bother. But there is a new one, SAC 2045, that's currently in its second season. I'll probably watch it at some point, but I've heard it's not very good.

The Rising of the Shield Hero. I like the way the character arcs were going, but it's turning into more of a harem anime than I care for. S2 started a while back, so I need to catch up.

Demon Slayer. Been watching this with my son. We have one episode left of the Entertainment District Arc, then waiting on the Swordsmith Village Arc.

Made in Abyss season 2 has begun, even in dub form! Saw S1 on Toonami, though I was about to watch it on my own on Prime when they picked it up. I've seen the movie, too, and I'm curious to see whether they pull a Demon Slayer and recap it as part of S2 since it's essential to the plot.

Yuru Camp and its sequel Heya Camp had been out for a while, so I was surprised to see they were going to make a movie, and it came out a few months ago.

Harley Quinn abruptly changed directions after S1, but I enjoyed both of them. Need to watch S3, which should be concluding soon, if it hasn't already.

Lastly, ones I've exhausted my supply of, and maybe they don't come to any sort of conclusion, but it's ambiguous whether they're going to continue. I'm still holding out hope.

Blade Runner: Black Lotus. Original Toonami/Crunchyroll series, and this might fall into the same trap as Fena: Pirate Princess, which is that Toonami called it "season 1," implying there would be a season 2, but it doesn't beg more story, so I dunno.

Wonder Egg Priority started off with a bang, set to be one of my all-time favorites. It had everything going for it. Then it made some really strange plot decisions that soured me on it. It doesn't come to any sort of ending, but I've heard nothing about it continuing either. I hope they can bring it back to its former glory. Realistically, the damage is done, but I'd like to see them improve it as much as they can.

Children of the Whales set up a cool setting and magic system, but later turned into a pretty standard "bad guy wants to take over the world" plot. Finished S1 and the OVAs, which don't conclude the story, but I've heard nothing about it continuing and am about to give up on it.

Watching any of these? I'd like to hear about it in the comments.

imagine keeping up with a show as it airs and isn't Kamen Rider

Hey, you already put Hyper Police in my watch list. You have a lot to answer for.

Happy to hear season three is coming for One Punch Man. Season three of Harley Quinn was fun. They avoided the urge to hit the reset button and instead are showing us what happened after our lovebirds ride off happily into the sunset. I found gen:LOCK's second season to be rather disappointing. They tried to switch things up by trying for more shades of gray and it just didn't work.

I continue to be:

Hugely addicted to Rascal Does Not Dream of Bunny Girl Senpai. I'm about to conclude my fifth run-through of the original 13 episodes, then will watch the movie for the fourth time. I also have the original novels as far as they've gotten with the English translation--book 8 with book 9 due out in December--and they just announced a couple weeks ago that a second movie is in production that will cover books 8 and 9. :pinkiehappy:

I'm not too surprised if gen:LOCK couldn't keep up the quality, given all the turmoil that went on at Rooster Teeth and the rather expensive voice talent they had no hope of retaining. It also seems like the kind of thing they could draw out interminably, and I hope that's not the direction it's going,

I don't think so. Season two wrapped up most of the original plot. There's a few lose ends though, so I guess they could make a season three if they really want to. The focus would have to change pretty radically though.

Lucifer and the Biscuit Hammer was a great manga. The anime production left a lot to be desired.

I think I only saw until the fourth or fifth season of RWBY, watching with Wolf. I tried out Ice Queendom, but considered it inferior to the original in everything but animation. IQ turned out to be a merely average anime, and lacked Rooster Teeth's geeky charm.

Speaking of Rooster Teeth, I think I may have seen one episode of gen:Lock back when it was new, but apparently wasn't drawn in.

MHA and Fire Force are both about as solid as shounen come. Wolf and I had watched them together, but had stalled out at season four and season two, respectively.

Dorohedoro is good-bizarre, with interesting characters and the bonus of great music. I rated it my #3 favorite show of 2020. Thanks for alerting me to Ma no Omake.

I saw a little of Talentless Nana, but the very premise pretty much relied on "tell, don't show" and I've also never been much for battle-of-wits animes.

I lost my notes about why I quit Otherside Picnic. Maybe because it was in the same season as Wonder Egg Priority and between the two of them, there was only room for one cosmic horror yuri. Although come to think of it, Lycoris Recoil is the only yuri anime I've seen in recent memory that wasn't cosmic horror. My thoughts on WEP pretty much echo yours. I was ready to call it Anime of the Decade, and then the last arc happened.

I saw a few episodes of Tokyo Revengers, but given that the girl was far and away the most endearing character, and we hardly see her at all, wasn't keen on continuing.

Shield Hero I saw the first season, but felt that I'd gotten the measure of everything I needed to see from that.

Re: Talentless Nana, I certainly understand entire genres just largely not appealing to you. I tend not to like historical ninja/samurai shows myself.

If you've seen through S2 of Fire Force, I think you're current. I haven't seen anything come out since then, and it's been a while.

Dorohedoro is definitely great just for its WTF factor. The only thing I find off-putting about it is the pretty low-quality CGI.

Yeah, Tokyo Revengers does have a lack of characters with rooting interest. The use of time travel kept up tension, except they never advance on that front. Nothing they do ever works, so it ends up predictable.

Shield Hero kind of suffers from the same thing. There was a cool reveal at the end of S1, but it's not something that gets resolved even through S2, if ever, so it feels like it stalls out.
