I gotta admit, when TMFF contacted me to tell me they were planning on doing a reading, I was dubious. As anyone who's read it will be aware, the form Ascentionism takes, of a fanfic on fimfiction.net, is pretty central to its meaning -- besides which, so much of the fic is explicitly visual that of all mediums to adapt it to, audio seems something of a poor fit. All that said, I think this audiobook turned out actually pretty well! It certainly works better as a companion to the fic than an outright replacement (not that I'm biased or anything), but I do think that the adaption does add a certain something.
I talked in my previous blog for Ascentionism about the serendipity of the image accidentally referenced in the fic's broken link, and how it tapped into the joy of fandom creation, rather than the cynicism of the previous image. This audio reading, then, brings that element even closer to the fore: language and wordplay recede before the swell of royalty-free violins, the memetic nature of internet/fandom creation is enhanced and expanded...etcetera, etcetera. You know, I could go on about all the interesting ways the change in format, and TMFF's additions, alter which elements are brought to the fore, while managing to retain the fic's core nature...but I think I'll just tell you to go watch the video, instead. It's less than ten minutes, it's not exactly a massive time commitment.
That aside, it's really genuinely pretty cool to have a reading of a fic, and honestly, kudos to TMFF for not just simply giving up on the idea when reading it.
