Xanadu: The Musical Review (RIP Olivia Newton John!) · 11:10am Aug 13th, 2022
I wrote this a week ago. A couple days later, Olivia Newton-John died :(
Holy shit just saw stage version of Xanadu at [url=https://www.facebook.com/thelagunaplayhouse/?__cft__[0]=AZVc2tkH9s4aufcvcU81rgxZ5SBxn1bBx5SxoowHtfWfqeCK1hoW40qyOdL2tw-4U06AVrIYPzlcCNtn_p2tpAr_kSo3Bkon7YIIzghSxn8csqIvoeFNm5NAGWMm-6Wf2kydGXbMPezxILiOoEWVn_fSFdx51YnQMf_qn1HtEKrMew&__tn__=kK-R]Laguna Playhouse and I love it so fucking much! Hot mess of a complex ambitious unfocused story that could use about a half hour more fleshing out, mostly of the rushed main relationship, BUT!: Joyous devotion to self-aware camp, ELO bops, the characters you know and love from Hadestown but none of the depressing seriousness, Starlight Express: Kylie Minnogue edition, historical edutainment, all the surprisingly-except-not-really-cause-it's-the-fucking-Greeks tragic mythology of the muses, whose portrayal leads us to the final and by far the most important ingredient of any worthwhile musical theater endeavor:
They're all hot-ass chicks and even hotter crossdressing twinks!
RIP Olivia Newton-John.
