SWTOR 7.0 · 4:16am Feb 17th, 2022

Sigh.

You know, given the recent track record of EA and Bioware, I really, really shouldn't be surprised at any of this.

From 2011 to 2016, I clocked at least 2000 hours in The Old Republic. After completing the Eternal Throne story, having a semi-decent conclusion and a very lackluster endgame loop, I unsubscribed for four years. When the game launched on Steam in July of 2020, I made a new account and put in an additional 640 hours, as of this writing. Now, after an eight-week delay, Legacy of the Sith is here for what was going to be the game's 10th anniversary expansion.

If I wasn't hunting down some final remaining Steam achievements, I'm pretty sure I'd be unsubbing again, and there's a very valid concern among the community that the game will not survive another drop in subscribers.

So let's start with aesthetics.

Someone at Bioware looked at the image on the right and went "Yeah, this looks better." No, it looks like absolute ass.

The UI has also undergone an overhaul. Out of all the criticisms and complaints about SWTOR I have read over the past decade, none of them were about the UI. I honestly believe it's just another UI team having to justify their continued existence and changing what isn't broken.

You guys should go have coffee with the Halo Infinite UI team.

The story, though I will likely not get to it for awhile, is just around the two hour mark, and from what I hear, is not all that satisfying. I like to think it's only the first chunk of content we're getting over the next year, but another part of me should probably know better. It's becoming increasingly clear that this team has been continually stripped of manpower to go work on similar train wrecks such as Anthem and Battlefield 2042. For all the good it did them.

So if you're a fresh, new player wondering if you should come see what this Star Wars MMO is all about, sure, come on in. There's hundreds of hours of legacy story content for you to do. But if you are a returning veteran from 5.0 or 6.0, I cannot recommend coming back. There's just not enough to warrant a return trip right now.

I just wonder why we got that kickass CGI trailer (the first one in five years) for what was just delivered on Tuesday.

I saw the Bio In BioWare and for a second I thought this post was about the Bioshock movie that Netflix is making.
