Episode Re-Review: Fake It 'Til You Make It

Oh joy, it's back to Season 8. Season 9 has its fair share of detractors, but hardly anyone I know ever sings Season 8's praises, and for good reason. We now know that the School of Friendship was added at Hasbro's request because they wanted the show to wrap up with nine seasons, forcing the writers to change their plans for the pillars. About the only good thing to come out of Season 8 seems to

Special Re-Review: Equestria Girls: Forgotten Friendship

While we now know that this has to take place not just before Season 8 but before the events of the 2017 FiM movie, it first premiered in February of 2018, about a month before Season 8 of FiM hit the airwaves. Interestingly, the Discovery Family broadcast omitted several scenes that were later released as part of an "extended" version. As for the writer, it was none other than Nick Confalone,

    Episode Re-Review: Uncommon Bond

After the absolute disaster that was "Secrets and Pies", Season 7 really needed something to redeem it and give it the chance to go out on a high note, especially now that the big 2017 movie had come and gone, and the show's future was still uncertain. Josh Haber, after having returned to the story editor's chair and ultimately taking back the reigns fully from Joanna Lewis and Kristine Songco

    Happy Birthday, Kathleen Barr

Today is Kathleen Barr's birthday. She is the talented woman who voiced Trixie and Queen Chrysalis in FiM, as well a host of other one-off or otherwise minor roles. And, apparently, she was planned to be the voice of Princess Celestia originally.

Ranking the Rainbow Dash Songs (From Worst to Best) · 4:23pm Jan 9th, 2022

Rainbow Dash did manage to ultimately get seven songs to herself, the same Applejack, giving Ashliegh Ball a combined total of fourteen songs (not counting the group ones). But which songs for Rainbow Dash were the best at showing her character, and which ones told us little or nothing about her? Well, let's find out. As always, this is just my personal opinion.

7. Can I Do It On My Own? (Flutter Brutter)
Why it's on the bottom: Just like with Fluttershy, this song barely even counts as a Rainbow Dash song. She's just there for moral support. Maybe if it was just Fluttershy singing to herself in silence while Zephyr's at work it would make more sense? There's really no need to repeat myself here, though I suppose it was nice to see that even after all the annoying flirting Rainbow was still willing to be supportive of Zephyr. She really owed him nothing despite knowing him.

6. CHS Rally Song (Equestria Girls: Friendship Games)
Why it's not on the bottom: At least this song is initiated as a Rainbow Dash song, and human Rainbow Dash as an athlete would certainly be no stranger to a pep rally. But this song really just serves as a quick recap of the first two Equestria Girls movies, nothing more and nothing less. There's also the whole "ponying up" thing, which just seems like it was added in because the plot said so. It's at least something though, "Can I Do It On My Own" has to be one of the weakest songs in the entirety of G4, which is saying something considering how many great songs they gave us.

5. I'll Fly (Tanks for the Memories)
Why it's in the bottom half: Yeah, shocker of all shockers, pony Rainbow Dash's big solo song isn't her best. Putting aside "Tanks for the Memories" potentially wanting to tiptoe their way around death (with a pretty poor allegory if that was the case), this song doesn't seem to regard the implications it's bringing up. It just throws out the line that Rainbow is fully aware of how wrong her actions are, but she doesn't care. This never gets brought up again in the episode, there's no calling out of Rainbow Dash's actions or the lengths she was willing to go to commit them. If anything, this is showing the dark side of loyalty, how it can be used for a selfish purpose. In this case, Rainbow thinks she's being loyal to her pet by preventing him from hibernating, even if it means messing up everyone and everything else. But it makes Rainbow Dash look unbelievably childish if she can't cope with losing a pet, no matter how attached she might be to him (especially since if it is just hibernation and not a stand in for something else, even kids will know that hibernation is temporary).

4. Awesome as I Wanna Be (Equestria Girls: Rainbow Rocks)
Why it's in the middle: This does feel somewhat in character for Rainbow Dash. The song is all about her bragging about how awesome she is, and that's definitely what Rainbow seems like on the surface. The problem is that that's all the song has to offer, there's no deeper meaning to it. And considering this is a song that was supposedly written for a band that we're to assume was human Rainbow Dash's idea, why would she write a song that's all about her? It doesn't seem like the other Rainbooms have to do anything. Yes, lots of bands have songs written about various members. The Beatles were particularly famous for this and part of what drove them apart was how little George and Ringo got to do the songs they wanted. But this song was written in advance, so what was it that got human Rainbow Dash all full of herself? If it were in the heat of the moment it could be spun as her getting swept up in the competition.

3. Time to be Awesome (My Little Pony, The Movie (2017))
Why it's in the top half: Even if others join in, Rainbow Dash is still leading this song at least early on. She's encouraging others, which is a bit unexpected for her. She makes for a surprisingly good motivator under the right circumstances, though it would probably carry more weight if the pirates dilemma hadn't just been brought up mere moments ago. And for all Rainbow knows, the parrot pirates could've been quite nasty before they were forced to work for the Storm King. As romanticized and glorified as they are in fiction, pirates were quite cruel in real life and lived very difficult lives. Still, the song is a good one. The only thing that doesn't make sense is for it to end with Rainbow Dash performing a sonic rainboom. She has no stated reason to do so, the pirates are already motivated. But Rainbow takes a bit of a back seat as this song goes on.

2. Find a Pet (May The Best Pet Win)
Why it's not on the top: From the beginning there's a bit of an issue with Rainbow Dash insisting on wanting a pet that's "awesome and cool". Wanting a pet just like her is fine, but she's kind of already declaring herself best pony before she's even done anything. Then from there, she kind of repeats the obvious: She wants a pet that can fly and can keep up with her. But Fluttershy stupidly keeps suggesting pets that don't fit that criteria, and by the end even Rainbow Dash is considering things like a wasp or a flamingo which I'm pretty sure is stretching the qualifications. She picks it back up at the end with her decision to hold a contest to decide which animal will be her pet, that's perfectly believable. And she and Fluttershy sing well together at the end.

1. Run to Break Free (Equestria Girls: Better Together Season 2)
Why it's on the top: This song is being sung by human Rainbow Dash, and it's about how she feels like she's living life in slow motion. How she desires to break out of that, helping others. It's surprising that just like Fluttershy, Rainbow Dash's best song is from her human counterpart. But this could easily work with her pony self, wanting to help others and aspire to be the best. She wants to live life in the fast lane, and she sees helping her friends as the best way to do that. It's kind of like Sonic, particularly how he's been portrayed in the past decade or so: He lives a carefree, easy going life, but you can still count on him to be there when you need him. He'll never let anything stop him, either from going fast or from helping his friends, because that's just what he does.

And there you have it, come back tomorrow when we'll look at and rank all the Twilight Sparkle songs.

For me, Run to Break Free is also number one
Time to be Awesome is second
I'll fly is third
And the rest kind of float around
