I also know what Friendship is NOT. · 6:52pm Jan 5th, 2022
In relation to my previous blog https://www.fimfiction.net/blog/975790/i-know-what-friendship-is
I also have a certain opinion of what Friendship isn't...
As in, what's NOT being a friend.
And yes, I'll use character examples (IN or outside of my fanfiction) There's no other way.
We'll start with here...
APPLE WHITE (Ever After High)
She strongly believes in tradition (As in everyone should follow their destines as printed in the book) Even if it means something BAD is destined to have to them. Like Raven Queen is supposed to be the next evil queen. It's her destiny to hurt people, and eventually be imprisoned. Raven doesn't want that life, nor does she wish to hurt her friends, but Apple... out of fear of losing her own story and her happy ending if Raven doesn't go evil... does all she can to convince Raven to follow her destiny, or voice her opinion of how "Wrong" Raven is.
What kind of a friend refuses to listen and understand how another feels?
Apple may claim she's doing it because she cares about others, but she is still coming off as self-centered (She and Rarity would get along swell)
Then there's Kari from Digimon 02...
Davis has a huge crush on her, so Kari often teases Davis in order to get him to behave, or do what SHE wants him to do. She also constantly flirts with TK and others for the soul-purpose to make Davis jealous for a quick laugh, and gets the others to do the same, and just like the others, she also doesn't seem to think too highly of him; always brushing him off when he has something to say or suggest (Even when he could be right) and she prefers to cower and retreat when the going gets tough and persuade Davis to run too, even though it may cost them THE WAR.
At least Davis tries his best to fit in. He tries to be a good friend, but the others have to play their part too. Davis may be the in possession of the Digi-Egg of Friendship, and he learned and understands more about Friendship than any of them... but he can't do all the work himself. He can't be the only friend.
In other words, Kari in Canon can be portrayed and seen as a real brat, who sees Davis more as a toy for her amusement than a friend. And many of us have made fictions surrounding that brattiness.
One of my trademarks is...
Kari and TK are dating, and Kari doesn't like how Davis is preferring to be alone rather than find himself a girlfriend because he still has feelings for her. So she and others try mercilessly to set him up on blind dates or play matchmaker with him, which annoys him to a justifiable anger.
-She wants him to have a girlfriend
-She doesn't want him to give up on romance
-She wants him to get over his crush on her
...She wants... SHE WANTS.
It's all what she wants. Never about him. Never respecting his decisions, his privacy, never giving him space.
What would truly make Kari the worst is if Davis DID find a new crush, and she kept trying to break them up for the sake of keeping him to tease him more.
Mr Rogers once told Arthur. "Real friends don't make fun of Real friends."
And the way Kari teases Davis, disrespects him, and tries to make him jealous... is she a real friend.
True, friends can make fun of others and tease each other all the time, but the way Kari does it... it's not like in the sitcoms.
Sir Theodore, from Jane and the Dragon. "Amusing yourself at the expense of another is costly entertainment, Jane."
It relates to how Kari makes fun of Davis.
JESTER JUSTICE:
Sir Ivan catches Jester in the act of making fun of him and impersonating him all over the castle, which greatly offends him, and so he challenges Jester into a duel for honor.
Sir Theodore repeats: "Amusing yourself at the expense of another is costly entertainment, Jane."
Here's another one I do question...
GIVING SOMEONE A VALENTINE OUT OF PITY/GUILT
Two examples are when Lisa Simpson gave Ralph Wiggum the card
Episode: I LOVE LISA...
That episode was extremely cruel...
Ralph was kind enough to give cards to all his classmates and didn't receive a single one (Mostly because the kids think he's weird, which makes him unworthy) You clearly then see Lisa erase a name from the card (Possibly her own) and gives it to him out of pity, but the truth is she STILL doesn't like him (Even as a friend) which she voiced later in the ep (Slightly justified) and she fully admits "I gave it to you is cuz no one else would!"
This implies she didn't truly care about Ralph's feelings, which is a major loss of points for her.
At least they made up in the end.
Let's look at another one.
BE MY VALENTINE CHARLIE BROWN
Charlie Brown doesn't get a single Valentines Card, or a nice gesture from anyone. All he gets is a candied heart which reads "FORGET IT, KID!"
Even Lucy adds further insult to injury. "Who would waste a valentine on Stupid Old Charlie Brown"
The next day, the girls come alone, and Violet (A girl who in the past has been just as mean as Lucy) offers him a used Valentine, causing Schroeder to balk at her.
Hold on there! What do you think you're doing? Who do you think you are? Where were you yesterday when everyone else was giving out valentines? Is kindness and thoughtfulness something you can make retroactive? Don't you think he has any feelings? You and your friends are the most thoughtless bunch I've ever known. You don't care *anything* about Charlie Brown! You just hate to feel guilty! And now you have the nerve to come around one day later and offer him a used valentine just to ease your conscience! Well, let me tell you something: Charlie Brown doesn't need your...
...Then Charlie Brown actually takes it.
...Point is, that's no act of friendship.
Another example, merely Fanon, but also a portrayal of real life...
When I make the Teen Titans get rid of all of Beast Boy's things and clean out Terra's room in order to "Help him" get over Terra and move on. They're not being concerned friends, especially when they just TELL him to move on or get over it.
That's not being sympathetic or understanding, nor is it being a good friends...
Their just giving him orders so THEY can be happy.
And finally, there's Twilight...
The way she constantly tries to pressure creatures to ACCEPT friendship, and turn their lives around, out of fear something dreadful will happen, or she just can't stand her own guilty conciseness like with the valentines.
That doesn't seem like friendship... that's more like being a control freak.
So again... don't go around telling me, I don't know what Friendship is.
