Random snippet to prove I’m still alive

“I got the time off!” The familiar voice emanating from the landline handset was jubilant.

A broad grin crossed Sunset’s face. “Great! Y’know, I can’t remember the last time both our vacation times lined up.”

“Four years, seven months, and twelve days.” The dry, and dryly humorous, reply came back instantly. “But who’s counting?”

So, uh, yeah, I’m here. I guess I should have mentioned it earlier, but it slipped my mind. Better late than never, I guess.

    Tidbits

Yes, I’m still around, though I still have nothing substantive for Fimfiction—and I’m not sure when, if ever, I will again. All I’ve got at the moment is a handful of random morsels from my tiny but active mind.

    Not naming names [writing tips]

As I’ve mentioned here and there, one of the (many) rules I generally abide by when writing for Twin Canterlots is: avoid using real-world names wherever possible. It’s harder than it seems—especially when one considers indirect coinages as well as direct references—and I don’t always succeed, but in general I find ways to skirt them most of the time. For the handful of people who

Mostly to demonstrate I’m still alive.

  • Cook is more fun to write. Rose is more . . . interesting? Dramatic? Rewarding? Difficult, certainly. I’m not sure exactly what word best describes her as a subject. A lot of the difference, I suspect, traces to the fact Rose has suffered far more trauma than Cook, and deals far more with trauma in her everyday life.
  • Of the stories I’ve posted so far, I think Amphorae remains my favorite, though I can’t say exactly why. It may be more sentiment than actual quality, though I do regard it as one of my better efforts—along with Foreign Nationals, Talking Heads, Three-act Play, and Virga.
  • My favorite chapter, on the other hand, I am very certain of: “Stand”, in Virga.
  • Working with Scampy on Three-act Play was amazing, utterly unlike any previous attempt to collaborate I ever suffered through. The resulting story left no doubt that Rose is coequal with Cook in the Twin Canterlots firmament.
  • Likewise, Mister Cook Goes to Canterlot was a fascinating experiment. I was fortunate to gather a coterie of dedicated commenters who provided truly good suggestions. Again, though, it may be a unique experience.
  • Whatever Fimfiction’s faults—and they are legion—it has by far the best UI/UX for reading and writing I have encountered on any Web site I can recall.
