Thoughts on the Mahora Martial Arts Tournament · 6:18pm Sep 24th, 2021
Psych! Lol, no. I'm here to give my impressions of G5.
When I first saw the character designs all those months ago, I was nervous. I tend to shy away from 3-d animation as it still has a long ways to go in key areas. However, that nervousness was mitigated immensely by the first trailer. The art and animation were much smoother than I thought they would be, and it seemed that the humor and dialogue would be on point. Fast forward again to today, when I have just finished watching the Gen 5 movie. It was better than I'd expected it to be, and definitely better than the Gen 4 movie. As a premiere and introduction to a new generation, I do think that Gen 4 S1:E1-2 did a slightly better job, but the needs of a movie differ significantly from the needs of a TV premiere.
Looking at the show going forward, I'm cautiously optimistic. However, I do have some concerns. The biggest one is that we saw neither hide nor hair of any non-pony races. Gen 4 spent a lot of time (especially in the latter seasons) bringing the various races of the world together in friendship. Is Gen 5 going to retread that ground, or is it going to be all ponies all the time? If they do retread that ground, then to what extent? The movie also never gave us any answers on the alicorn question: where are Twilight, Celestia, Luna, Cadence, and Flurry Heart in this world? Will they be making any sort of appearance in the show, or are they assumed to have passed on? Finally, how is the show going to handle its five main characters being from (and supposedly still living in) three different cities? There are a hundred different ways to handle that, so I won't speculate there. There are a lot of questions to be had about Gen 5 that the movie didn't quite address. So as I've said, cautiously optimistic.
If you haven't watched the movie yet, it's up on Netflix. Solid 7.5/10, in my opinion.
P.S. Hitch is G5 Best Pony.
Agreed, a solid 7/10 for me and Hitch is best pony (next to Izzy).
