The Problem with Writing a Element Fic · 2:00am Jul 25th, 2021

Okay, it’s no secret that there are a ton of ‘New element fics’. What I mean by this is that there are fics out there that create a new Element/Elements of Harmony.

While it can be done, it’s a delicate process.

See, one main issue is if the fic is NOT an AU. I’m not saying it can’t be done, but it feels a little outta place. I mean, canonically, we’re used to the normal six. So adding a new one to the mix can feel..

Off.

Another issue is that sometimes, maybe due to the writing, it can feel forced. And sometimes, the problem is sometimes, an OC feels too dedicated to the element. Like, that element makes up their entire personality now.

I mean, Fluttershy isn’t always kind, AJ has then ability to lie, Rarity can be pretty greedy and self centered, Rainbow can be disloyal, Pinkie can get sad, and Twilight doesn’t always use magic. Or at least, not all the time.

So when an element becomes the OCs entire personality, they get boring quickly, and even limited in what they can do.

So uh, there’s my little rant. Now, I’m not saying all element fics are bad. But they’re a delicate process to make.
