So, I've been thinking recently about the new G5 MLP, and how they are connecting it to G4, and a thought crossed my mind. What if Sunny is the next to ascend to Alicorn level. Now the reason I think about this is because, one, magic is gone in Equestria and friendship seems to be a thing of the past. According to info so far, Twilight and her friends were known as the guardians of harmony, and they were all considered ancient. Perhaps, bare with me on this, while Twilight had longevity, due to her alicorn ascension, she knew she could not last forever, and needed to find somepony worthy of taking on her mantle of responsibility to wield alicorn magic. With the passing of her and her fellow alicorns, including her neice, Flurry heart, the alicorns and the guardians of harmony faded into legend, and were now seen to be no more than fairytales for children to listen to, but Sunny's family are some of the select few that have key parts from the past that prove the existence of the legendary ponies. As Sunny grows into maturity, she finds something that leads her to go on a quest to find lost pieces of friendship. Perhaps Twilight, knowing that no one in her time was worthy to take on the alicorn mantle, left clues for a future generation of ponies to figure out, and only those pure of heart that hold on to the values of friendship could seek these pieces of friendship out, and after bringing them together, Twilight would be able to visit the realm of Equestria for a short period of time that would allow her to pass on the mantle of responsibility to keep friendship alive and help Equestria become the thriving kingdom it once was, with Sunny showing she was worthy of the alicorn power, and her friends were worthy of the power of friendship.

Now I know, your thinking "What about the students of friendship" Well, let me toss a tid bit of information. What if Sunny is the descendant of Sandbar. Perhaps, sometime in the distant future, the students of friendship are passing down their knowledge of the power of friendship, but in the process, it gets misinterpreted, and other nations outside of Equestria want the power for themselves, and all of the sudden the secrets of friendship are lost to time because no nation wanted to share their secret with the other, and the Gaurdiands of harmony have perished after their old age has taken them, leaving Twilight alone, and unable to pass on the secrets she herself knew to trusted ponies, who eventually, she herself perishes from her very old age.

Now, there's a lot of areas I need to yet dive into, but this is a rough draft of what I think may have happened that has led to the events of G5.
