I once cared deeply about that fact. Read countless books and cried many times re-reading my works. Nowadays, I care much less, and write to write, so long as the process is enjoyable.
Like a wind crying endlessly through the universe, Time carries away the names and the deeds of conquerors and commoners alike. And all that we were, all that remains, is in the memories of those who cared we came this way for a brief moment.
Similar notes to that poem about Ozymandias, published over a century before Mr. Ellison was even born. (Actual research shows that there were two, but they were on the same topic as a sort of friendly competition between authors so it doesn't matter in practice).
Then again, there is nothing new under the sun and even that sentiment is so old that my specific wording is from the Bible.
I should explore more of his work. I've read a number of his short stories, including I Have No Mouth And I Must Scream, and really want to see Demon With A Glass Hand sometime.

I read their works and, although I wasn't too much of a fan, it was them, as people, as writers, that drew me to them. My dream is to be like them in writing stories and articles and the like, ones that are read that they can make a living off, being 'legit' writers and all that. I would recommend watching 'Dreams with Sharp Teeth' and reading 'I, Asimov' to get the scope of what the life of a writer was like for them.
