Not so Sweet and Smoky · 12:21am Feb 10th, 2021
I was at work having a rather slow day when my husband called. That is a little unusual for him. Usually he just texts me. Unless it is something important. Turned out it was important.
The house was on fire.
This is not the first time this has happened. About three years ago, a fire started on the back porch from a discarded cigarette. I managed to put it out with only minimal damage to the porch. This time it was bigger. My daughter Pinkie and my husband were at the house when they started to smell smoke. This is not unusual since I lot of our neighbors burn stuff (even though they're not supposed to since we live in the city limits.) But then, the smoke alarm went off. Pinkie and my husband ran through the house trying to find where the smoke was coming from. Finally Pinkie went into the back room and looked out at the porch. She said, and I quote:
"I think I know where the smoke is coming from."
The back porch was on fire. The posts that held the screens were burning as well as a discarded mattress that was leaning against the porch. My husband filled up a pitcher with water and started dousing the flames while Pinkie called 911. We were very proud of her, she did not panic or get upset. When the firemen showed up, she took the dog outside so he wouldn't get in the way.
Luckily the damage was limited to the back porch. If they had not caught it in time, it could very well have spread to the roof and attic. I am glad they were both home when it happened. Pinkie usually sits in one of the bedrooms doing stuff on her computer and could have become trapped. I am very grateful that my husband is sober and was able to deal with the emergency.
I have a lot to grateful for.
Oh my
Glad to hear that nobody was hurt
So am I. Thanks.
