Ah Thanksgiving, that time of year where no one gives a fuck about the actual holiday, have an excuse to eat more food than usual but have to suffer from the presence of their extended family members, and watch giant bags of air fly across a big ol' city really slow. Isn't it just a magical time of year this year? Hi it's me, the 21st of the month again, time for an update...
So to start off with, you may have noticed two blogs posts put up recently, and they both say continue. While it is self explanatory and I explain there as well, I'll take the extra inch and explain it here. Basically, I was updating Season 10 and Specials and I kind of reached my limit. Well with Specials Universe I did anyway. It wouldn't let me type anymore so I had exceeded the character limit, so I had to start another one to continue that. And for Season 10, every time I would try to save changes, it would just give me a server error with a picture of Derpy. But if I were to delete anything, it would save just fine, so I'm assuming it was another way of saying that I had exceeded the limit. And while that is not practical in terms of design, there's nothing I could do other than maybe go through and delete whatever isn't necessary. But the thing is that I rather have everything kept the way it is so you kind of see how everything has progressed and such.
Also, I updated stuff, I'll leave the list as usual at the end so if you want to, you can check out what I updated in the plans for Universal Magic. Trust me, I added good stuff.
But that's not what you want to see, you want to know if I finished working on those shelves from IKEA from last time and started working on the re-edit...in which chase, no and yes. No for IKEA, but yes to the re-edit. And I am happy to say that I'm almost at the half way point of the re-editing process for Episode 10. Although the second half will probably take me a while since that's the part where the most additions come in.
So my idea is that I probably could have it done by the beginning of December, maybe a little later or sooner, but the thing is even then I'll probably hold off and wait to give it to you guys until Christmas Eve; so it's kind of like a present from me to you guys. So that's what I'll do.
Speaking of the re-edits, let's talk about that real quick so you have an idea as to what to expect. First off, it'll definitely be worth it to go back and see the changes and additions that I've made. The original episode 10 is 1,690 words long. So far it is currently sitting at 13K. And probably by the end of it it'll be around 21K, the minimum requirement for these episodes (although I'm not holding it to that standard for these re-edit simply because it's kind of too late to set that rule in, but I'll try...), maybe a little more, maybe a little less.
(Speaking of word count, I remember 7 and a half years ago when I was writing that episode, I thought 1,690 words was a lot. Hell, I tried to mentally prepare myself when it came to editing it. Nowadays I can do 1,690 plus more in my sleep...)
Of course the thing to remember is that it's not a remake / re write, it's a re-edit where I go in, clean things up, add some detail, maybe expand upon a few things here and there and uhhh...call it a day. For me to re write the episode, it would require me to throw everything out and do something completely different from scratch. Here, I'm just kind of following what I wrote almost 8 years ago by this point. (Yeah, my baby is almost 8 years old in about 2 - 3 months from now...) If I were to re write the episode, I would have to really think about it and think outside the box. Like for example, if I were to re write it, it would probably be about when a mysterious pony comes to the town of Stalia named Henry (remember, he's supposed to be the Trixie here), and then he gets the town's attention and blah blah blah, and then he has evil intent and then later on releases a terrible monster upon the town and the EoP have to defeat or maybe only Knight could defeat or something, as it goes deep into Henry as a character. You know, something like that, but here, I'm just adding detail and it's more or less laid back in it's premise. Which is fine.
Although the original goal for these parody episodes from FIM was going to be just that. But over the years things have changed and I've sort of changed what I expect from myself when doing these parody episodes. I set the standard to think outside the box like for example Return of Harmony parody's episode, Return of Protection. Instead of going with the old idea of Discord is evil again and the EoP has to go through similarly to what EoH went through in RoH, Discord is evil again, but from a different universe, and turns into a giant demon monster thingy and has multiple forms and it's just EoP vs Demon Discord. At east that's the plan in Plans sort of speak. So that's just something to keep in mind here.
Another thing to note, don't worry, even though some changes will come, your favorite and classic lines such as:
I fucking knew it. Wolf and I even betted on it, which means I fucking win, and he would owe me 20 bits.
and
While that was going on, I ran up a snow covered mountain, did exercises physically, and with my magic, punched a punching bag for a while, and did other training exercises from Rocky 4.
Don't worry, those will be in there....because everypony remembers those lines and it's certainly not me being in denial...
Also Henry gets to talk. Yeah, if I remember correctly, Henry does not have a single line of dialogue at all. Here he does so that's something to look forward to.
And on top of that, it'll be in 16K, where you can see the crisp details on every letter that you read, even if you can't tell the difference, it'll still cost 5 times as much as it did before.
Anyways, the only thing left to talk about is what will happen to the original Episode 10. Well as stated before, I was thinking of putting up an archive and put it in Plans so there can be an archive for all of these old, forgotten versions of these episodes. I mean the original prologue, the second version of the prologue, and the original episode 1, 1.5, 2, and 3 are all long gone. I still have it though saved in the same word doc that I've been using the past 8 years, it hasn't changed. And on top of that, there was another version of the prologue that I never released, although I'm not sure if I have it still or not. I might but I would have to go through the almost 3MB of the word doc just to find it, and for a word doc that's a lot.
Trust me, I have a lot of documents related to Universal Magic just sitting on my hard drive that I've created over the past almost 8 years to the point where it's not even funny. I can't even tell what is what anymore. I mean I have something I want to use for the next episode, but I forgot where I put it at and it's such a pain in the ass to find it all. But at least I keep it all on backed up hard drives and such just in case.
And on top of that, there's an even earlier version of the prologue, from the first version that I printed out, not edited, pretty much in it's earliest stages and in its rawest form, although it's only on paper so I would have to scan it or something and then find a way to put it on here.
But that's what I have been thinking about, and of course why wouldn't I make an archive? But the thing is that I've been on the fence on doing an archive. Part of me wants to say yes, do it, it's kind of important and to show how everything was or is or whatever But the other part of me says that it's stupid and to be fair it's an embarrassment. Not that I care of course, old stuff might be embarrassing like pictures of you when you were a kid or something, but it doesn't mean it's bad to keep it. But I wonder if it's a good idea to do it you know? Is it really wise for me to do so? Maybe, so we'll see. But for now the original episode 10 will stay how it is until I'm ready to put up the re-edit of it, and then from there it'll be taken down, with maybe an archive later to come.
