I don't care if it makes any sense in either context, I've seen it twice so it's okay now.
Also theses 'birrin' creatures are precious and I wish to learn more of them.

Nah they thought of that: see the housing? Notice it's kinda long? My guess is it covers a recoil mechanism, to keep out dirt and low-hanging branches, etc.
I notice they're hexapods, or centauroids as we called them when fan-turned-pro Bonnie Dalzell introduced them to SF in the 70's. Later Dalzell herself, I recall, realized that the energy requirements of six-limbed megafauna made it pretty unlikely to survive evolutionary competition. They'd go extinct at the first climactic shift.
