Interview with Zontan
Snow Heart by Nailah
Zontan by Zontan.

Snow Heart

Most ponies were scared of the forest, she wasn’t among them. Being a bat pony had its perks at times. It was night, so no one would bother her. She sighed heavily as she ventured deeper.
“Frost....where are you?” she whispered to the empty distance of trees that plagued her. Why was she out here in the middle of the night in a forest filled with mysterious dangers? Her little sister had ran away. She had to find her, had to hope she wasn’t too late.

Zontan

Zontan walked easily through the forest, idly listening for the sound of movement. This forest was wilder than most, and it tasted of magic, which intrigued him. Even still, there was very little here that could threaten a dragon of his size. He raised his head as he heard a voice through the trees. It was quiet, but his hearing was better than most. Curious, he turned and headed in that direction. He didn’t make nearly as much noise as one might expect from such a large creature, but it was still impossible to be completely silent in a forest like this.

Snow Heart

Snow Heart sighed heavily.
“Frost Heart...why did you leave? What did I do wrong?” she asked herself, kicking at the dirt beneath her hooves. This was all her fault. She perked when she heard a shift in the ground, a very slight breeze. Some pony was here! She raced towards the creature without really thinking it through. Standing there, mouth opened wide enough to catch flies. She stared at the dragon before her.
“You’re definitely not my little sister…” she began, taking a slight step back. “I’ll just um go sorry for bothering you!” she spoke attempting to walk away. Dragons weren’t known for being friendly. She felt her entire body shaking with fear.

Zontan

Zontan watched as the small creature emerged from the trees and stopped dead, his expression turning amused at her reaction. He lowered his head down to examine her, wisps of smoke puffing from his nostrils as he breathed. “You’re new,” he said after a moment, not acknowledging her words at all. “I don’t think I’ve ever seen a pony quite like you before.”
He took a step forward as she backed up, closing the distance easily. His gaze flicked to the trees behind her, and then back. “You’re welcome to run,” he said easily. “But then I do believe I’d have to chase you, and that might make me hungry.”

Snow Heart

Snow Heart paused in her steps, as she gulped. “New? I guess you could say that. Though I don’t really go out of my way to encounter dragons.” she said as she turned back so she was facing him. Furling her wings tightly against herself, she decided right then and there, that she wasn’t going to run. That would be well stupid. And she wasn’t about to be his next meal. She looked up to him, as she spoke.
“Dragon...Do you have a name? I’m Princess Snow Heart, but you can just call me Snow. So how did you end up here? What brought a dragon to this world of ponies and magic?

Zontan

“Princess?” Zontan noted, amused. “How interesting.” He settled down in front of her, bringing his head down closer to her level, now that she didn’t seem about to run. “You can call me Zontan. As for how I ended up here… well, I enjoy seeing new places and meeting new people. Your world is… different than most, and I find most of its inhabitants delightful. Even if your dragons are somewhat inept. It’s an enjoyable place to spend my time.”

Snow Heart

Snow Heart listened to him, as she tried to stay calm. Don’t freak out. He’s just a dragon. A big scary dragon that could eat me. She reminded herself. She decided to calmly sit down across from him. Taking a deep breath.
“Oh I see, that’s very interesting, and yeah, the dragons here are well lacking in some degrees. Not that you aren’t a total badass dragon with powerful dangerous claws, and fangs, and fire…” she gulped, as sweat dropped down her face, and she gulped.
“Yes, I’m a Princess. It’s kind of a long story, I’m sure you don’t really want to hear about that. But um what about you? Why don’t you tell me more about Zontan. I’m sure he is far more interesting than me!”

Zontan

Zontan chuckled softly. “Do I make you nervous, little pony?” He considered for a moment, then shook his head. “There’s not much to tell. I’m nine hundred years old, give or take a few decades. I’m an avid student of magic, and I like designing new spells, exploring the world, reading, and eating cute ponies that don’t compliment me often enough.” His smirk made it clear that last was at least partially a joke.

Snow Heart

Snow Heart flushed slightly, fidgeting in place. “No...not at all. Dragons are really cool.” replied Snow Heart as she felt herself shifting a bit of her white mane out of her violet hues. She listened to him as he spoke. “You sure are um...handsome, strong and mighty...um.” she gulped. Please for Celestia’s sake don’t eat me.
Snow Heart needed to change the topic away from thoughts of eating her for a snack. He mentioned a liking of reading.
“So you said you enjoy reading, do you also enjoy writing? What do you write, and what is it about writing about magical ponies that you enjoy?”

Zontan

Zontan considered that for a moment. “I write a lot of things. I write for myself, not for anyone else, so that means I try new things a lot. I like pieces that explore characters and their nuances, so I often put characters in difficult or novel situations to see how they react. Mostly, I want my stories to make people feel things about the characters they’re reading about. If someone says they laughed or cried or really understood what the characters were going through, I did my job.”

Snow Heart

Snow Heart listened with interest as he spoke. It was always interesting to hear from others, and well she typically didn’t get a chance to sit down with a dragon like this.
“So in regards to writing, what advice would you give a new writer? One that was just getting their feet wet?” she asked as she smiled towards him. Hoping by the end of this she would be able to continue her search, and maybe gain a friend.

Zontan

Zontan hmmed. “Just keep writing. It doesn’t matter if it’s good or not, just that you wrote it. Practice will make you better, even if you don’t realize it. And make sure you surround yourself with other writers, who can give you constructive feedback, encouragement, advice, all of it. It’s very easy when you’re starting out to become discouraged because what you write isn’t as good as what you want to read, but remember that the things you’re reading were written by people with more experience than you, and at one point they were just starting out too. Don’t give up.”

Snow Heart

“Don’t give up. I like that. It’s a mindset I try to live by. I...well it’s probably not important, but well my writer went through a rough time in her life, and to her writing was the only escape. The only place she felt safe. And that is one of the many reasons she writes, and she hopes that she can help others too. That is really all there is to it.” smiled Snow Heart, as she blushed darkly. She looked up to him. He was such a strong and noble dragon, and comparing her to him was like comparing apples to oranges. She thought to herself. What should I ask him? What would others want to know about a dragon like him?
“Is there anything you’d like your fans to know about you the writer?”

Zontan

Zontan took a moment to think about that, tapping one claw against the ground. “No, I don’t think so. As a writer, I prefer that my work speak for itself. I don’t think you need to know who I am to appreciate what I wrote, and besides, like I said earlier, I write for myself. It’s nice to have fans, of course, but I’d like to think I’d still do it even if I didn’t have any.” He paused for a moment, then added, “I suppose if I wanted to say anything, it’s just that I appreciate everyone who reads and enjoys my writing. Just because I like to think that I don’t need readers, doesn’t mean I don’t want them. I read every comment on my work, even though I rarely reply. So, thanks.”

Snow Heart

“Oh? And here I’d thought you’d delight me with the tale of the mighty Zontan, and how he eats ponies for breakfast…” she chuckled, and quickly coughed into her forehoof. “I understand that, truly I do. I myself tend to well hide in a bush if I’m questioned. I find I’m really not that interesting, I think the stories I tell are much more fascinating. Now, Zontan. I just have a few more questions, and then I really should get going. I’m searching for my little sister. She ran away from home, and I’m terribly worried about her. Imagine if she encountered a dragon or worse~!” she spoke gulping.
“What is one story that has inspired you? It doesn’t even have to be mlp, and what is one thing that it taught you?”

Zontan

Zontan grinned. “I mean, if that’s the tale you want to hear, I can certainly oblige. Though, in my experience ponies are more of a lunch food.” He chuckled again. “I don’t know if I can point to a single story that inspired me. There are probably dozens that have influenced who I am as a writer. If I had to name some authors… Heinlein, Piers Anthony, Tolkien… I love reading about fantastical adventures, and it’s probably where I got my love of exploration. So I suppose it taught me to live a little, and not stay cooped up in my lair all the time. After all, if I never went wandering, I wouldn’t meet delicious ponies like you and your sister.” He grinned. “Why don’t we see if we can find her? It’d be a shame if she was eaten by a dragon.”

Snow Heart

Snow Heart tensed up at that. “You didn’t eat her did you? She’s a pegasus pony, white fur, blue mane and tail, has a crystal heart with three shards that dangle down from the bottom, green eyes.” spoke Snow Heart explaining what her sister looked like. “It’s all my fault she ran away. I guess I didn’t even notice that all the ponies were paying attention to these wings I gained, and my sister felt like she wasn’t important. Which is far from the truth. I love my little sister. She is the only sister I have, and I have to find her, no matter what. And then beg her to forgive me for being so ignorant and blind to her needs. She needed me,and I wasn’t there. Makes me feel like a real jerk.” pouted Snow Heart, as she whimpered, and the first of many teardrops fell down her face. “I miss her Zontan. I only hope it’s not too late. We should get going before it gets dark. But before we go on some crazy search and rescue mission, is there anything else you’d like to say?”

Zontan

*silence*
