*********

Greetings, folks. Here is my review of My Little Pony: The Movie. Honestly, this was actually a great film to watch. Not to mention that this film has new characters that actually have a role to play and not like the season 9 characters who were created just to pander to the fanbase and nothing else. I also like how that this film has a slightly darker tone than the show has. While there are quite a number of things I liked about this, there are also other things I didn’t particularly like in the film. So here are my thoughts on this movie:

Animation: As I already mentioned in my Rainbow Roadtrip review (since it also has the same animation from this movie), the animation here is gorgeous and very appealing. It is very lively in the background and in the way how all the characters were designed. While I prefer the animation from the show (at least before seasons 8 and 9), this style looks very amazing. Enough said!

Story: It took the main characters on a high adventure albeit a dangerous one as their beloved city of Canterlot has been invaded by the Storm creatures. It led way to develop the character of Twilight Sparkle and helped her press through the perilous challenges she faced. However, I did not like the fact that she was so distrustful of her friends especially when she manipulated them to distract Queen Novo long enough for her to steal that pearl. However, I understand why she did this as her friends—mostly Pinkie Pie—were unfocused on the mission, didn’t take the situation seriously, and merely put more stress on Twilight. So that heated argument between Pinkie and Twilight which led to the latter saying she would be better off without them was just... sad. Just very sad. Both were in the wrong. They should have communicated with each other better instead of just holding in their emotions. Also, I wish they did something more with Spike. He barely did anything of significance.

New characters: As I already mentioned, these guys finally have some aurora of potential and taste around them. But that doesn’t mean I favor any of them. They are above average at best including Capper, but none of them are my favorites. They are still at least more watchable than the useless season 9 one-shot characters.

Villains: Now to the best part... you guys may be wondering about my opinion of Tempest Shadow (aka, Fizzlepop Berrytwist). To be fair, she is not that great of a villain but is only more interesting as a reformed character. Just like with Sunset Shimmer, she’s more likable as a protagonist; but like Starlight Glimmer, her backstory that explained her rise to villainy makes little to no sense. How exactly does a broken horn by a Ursa Major and her out-of-control magic that forced her friends to leave her give birth to her dark side? Are you serious? Were there no doctors in Equestria that can help with her magical condition or any spells that could’ve healed her?

But no, she was like, “You know what? I’ll just betray my own kind and team up with a tyrant in the high hopes he will restore my horn! Nothing can go wrong with that!” First of all, that was just one time her friends left her. Second of all, why was she that pissed off about it? That’s like someone getting sick from a cold that would force his/her friends to leave that sick person because you know why? BECAUSE THEY DON’T WANT TO GET INFECTED!! It’s just common sense! Her friends didn’t want to be harmed by her relentless magic that she herself couldn’t control at the time! It was for safety reasons! It’s absolutely pathetic and childish.

So Tempest is just a badly written villain with a laughable backstory. Oh, and Grubber is basically an evil version of Spike but less memorable and likable. That’s all I can say about him. But as for this guy:

The Storm King was honestly the best part of the whole movie. He stole every scene he was in and had a humongous impact on everyone in it. He was the driving force for the story and gave a Hades/Jafar vibe in his charisma and personality. It really sucks that he has less screen time and didn’t do much except drain the magic from the four alicorns and create a huge rampaging storm in Canterlot with the Staff of Sacanas. Liev Schreiber gave life to his character and made him very awesome with the dialogue he was given. Not many people like the Storm King for obvious reasons, but I am one of the few who actually like him. My favorite part was him playing with the staff to move the sun and moon like a little child. That actually made me laugh. He’s hilarious and intimidating at the same time.

Overall, this was a great movie of the series. I give it an 8/10.

Peace.

(Shameful) I never saw the movie.

I like the pirates...though the promotional material lied about how piratey the girls were gonna get. XP

I love this movie and 8/10 is a good rate. This movie is not prefect, but not bad. Overall, I love this movie and it story plot and I love how they add hippogriff.

I’m going to defend Tempest and say that when it comes to unicorns, their magic is important. Plus, tge trauma of losing her horn and losing her friends probably got her to snap. You don’t always think straight when so much bad things happen at once.

Oh, I did see the movie.

You can love Tempest all you want, but her backstory still makes no sense. Just because she went through that measly experience doesn’t mean she had to betray her own kind like that. That means she didn’t even seek for medical attention or try to find new friends.

But we all have our opinions.

Yep, I love the Storm King too. Even though he wasn't in too many scenes, he made me laugh every single time he was on screen. Also, he reminds me a lot of Hades from Disney's Hercules and Lord Farquaad from Shrek.

Proof that was any way it could be cured?

Could it not be cured? The least she could’ve done was seek a doctor.

Even if it couldn’t be cured, her snapping like that is just stupid. Again, just my opinion.

The movie's animation was sure beautiful.
The princesses like Luna definitely looked great. And nice design of Tempest and such.

Though its hard for me to fully enjoy the movie with how the Royal Sisters got terribly shafted there.
It hurts so much for Luna's case. The movie was a once-in-a-lifetime thing but the writers just shafted the sisters big time.
This failure here they suffered is worse than the others so far due to Equestria was actually invaded by a military force and fell to it(for 3 days) and the princesses failed badly infront of all of Equestria. The sisters' reputations will be damaged big time with how they failed Equestria big time.
It hurts more for Luna with it happening to her since she could have died, due to turning to stone while still flying(Tempest was flipping reckless there). It also screams the writers pulling out all of the stops to ensure all the princesses not named "Twilight 'chosen one' Sparkle" gets shafted. Luna could have gotten to shine if she managed to escape, but nope.. Tempest had to be reckless and statue-ed her while she was in mid-air iirc.
What's worse is how there's no repercussions on after the movie. Like the fact Luna and Celestia brushed this defeat aside instead of feeling affected by this makes it even more aggravating. A defeat like this shouldn't be brushed aside like that.

A couple of other things that bugs me too.
Like how Spike was a freaking pufferfish. It continues the "Haha, Spike gets the short end of the stick and reduced to some form instead of being equals with the Mane 6". What's worse is they really did planned on making him a sea-dragon according to concept art but they scrapped it for some reason.
And there's the redesign of the throne one. It looks beautiful but there is one huge issue, no one in the movie acknowledged it(especially since the change is applied in season 8 and 9), like they were acting like its been like that this whole time.
Its a big problem with one thing, Luna's throne. She actually got her own actual throne of her own and yet its not acknowledged at all.
Many fans were waiting for if Luna to get her own throne to finally be equals with Celestia iirc. For seven whole seasons she didn't have one till the movie. And yet it happened off-screen, Luna getting her own throne is a huge thing there honestly.
Its aggravating there, doesn't help that she got her own throne in something where she got humiliated so badly there and the fact she didn't get to keep it for long either due to the whole retirement bs.

I have a question:

Even if the idea is openly a late one to bring to the table, do you think it’s possible for an extended version of this movie to be made? Mainly to cover things that the original version didn’t bring to light before, like giving the Storm King more scenes?

I was just curious.

I know that there were many live-action movies that eventually got an extended version, but I don’t think it’s ever been done with an animated film before.
