"The “slaver” trope is easily the worst part of all “evil” races in dnd. It’s such a lazy way of trying to portray “evil creatures”. Instead of writing something complex or morally interesting it’s all just genocidal slavers. The slaver trope has seriously damaged the idea of a slaver race as ever being cool to me. It’s a boring uninspired trope. It honestly feels like the writers wanted to characterise some races as being “evil” but couldn’t make a coherent reason for players to see them as evil besides their appearance so they slapped an ad hoc explanation of them being slavers in an attempt at duct taping together an “evil” culture. I really like some races like duergar, fire giants, mind flayers and even grungs but I always rewrite them in my campaign to NOT be slavers. I always try to rely on something else to characterise them with an “evil” flair." - from Settlerking
