Jurassic Park: Stop Motion Animatics · 12:38am Dec 24th, 2019

Before the decision was made to use CGI, the dinosaurs of 1993's Jurassic Park were initially going to be animated via stop motion. Although this never came to pass, certain test reels were used to help map out the final scenes.

Below are two such test reels, specifically from the T-Rex Attack and the Raptor Kitchen sequence.

I remember the Raptor animatic, I have that on my Jurassic Park DVD. Interesting to see how these compare to the finished product, and wonder "what could have been"...

It's really weird seeing the Raptors flicking their tongues like that.

I know. It's strange - and I get why I was left out. On the one hand, it does kind of illustrate the point of them as unnatural creatures, and probably would have worked best in Michael Crichton's original script of the film, but on the other hand Jack Horner made a very good call when he called for them to remove the tongue-flicking.
