Camp Woods · 5:08am Dec 15th, 2019

All names of people and locations mentioned in this post have been changed for privacy reasons (except my own).

So, let's take a trip together back to October 29, 2017. My 5th grade year. And my mother was helping me pack for my first overnight school trip. I was ecstatic that the field trip to Camp Yarn was in 2 days. I was bouncing around, fantasizing about what it was going to be like. I was so excited, but my mom tried to keep me in check. 2 days later, and I was boarding the bus for the trip. The ride there was a little lonely, since I couldn't talk to anyone because of the huge trash bag full of stuff I was carrying.

When we got to camp, we seperated by gender into our rooms. I was almost fully unpacked (as I could get) when a teacher came in and informed us that we'd be switching rooms with the guys. I was confused about why we had to do this, but tried to gather all of my stuff and move rooms as quickly as possible. When I unpacked (for the second time), I realized that I didn't have my sleepmask. I literally cannot sleep without a sleepmask on, especially in unfamiliar environments. I got very upset. My bunkmate, Jada (pretty much only friend I had at the time) tried to confort me, but failed. I took medicine at the time to help control my ADHD outburts (story for Monday), but at that point, it had worn off (I don't even think it really worked at that point). Anyway, after about 15 minutes, I had gotten over it, mostly.

We were outside playing games when the camp counselor started selecting random people for KP, which meant you had to set up the dining hall before meals, and clean it up afterwards. And who got picked for the first one but me? When I went inside (as you could imagine, 10-year-old me was not too thrilled about this), I met Rose. Rose is still one of my favorite people to this day. We hit it off almost instantly, and got our table ready in no time at all. I don't remember too much about my tablemates, other than Rose and Jada, except for Haylee, who is one of the people who hated and tormented me for no reason. At least she was tame at meals.

It was Halloween that night, so we played a game that involved candy outside. In the dark. With little supervision. Did I mention that this was when all those killer clowns were running around? I was a little paranoid, but then I tried my favorite candy for the first time. Swedish Fish. I LOVE those things.

After we did that, it was time for our evening snack, and one of my least favorite parts of that trip. Showers. 3 minute showers. It took four just to wash my hair at the time, let alone condition (nowadays it takes at least 7, without conditioner). After I was finally done, I made a shocking realization. I didn't have a towel! I don't think I had ever been that frustrated. I ended up shaking myself dry before putting on my pajamas and heading to my room. That night, we all shared jokes and ghost stories after we were supposed to be in bed. That sounds like such a camp stereotype, but that's what ended up happening.

This post is getting long. You should rest your eyes for a few seconds.

The next day was when everything just seemed to go haywire. We were having "pancakes" for breakfast, which actually ended up being waffles that were as hard as rocks and devoid of all flavor. Every meal served before that was awesome, and most meals served after that one were awesome, too. I just don't know what went wrong. It was time for the hike. It was one mile there and back, so two miles in total. (which was a lot in elementary school). Jada didn't like he idea of going on a hike, and niether did I. We started walking, and I was talking with Jada most of the time. Eventually, we came to a rest stop. It was disgusting. The one notable part about it was a stall that had nothing in it. It was completely empty. It looked like a shower stall, but without a shower. Jada had left at about his time, so I was alone with the group of people who hated me. I went into the stall to investigate when I heard the stall door closing. And locking. They had locked me in the stall from the outside. Then they bolted. They were laughing as they ran. I remember crying and shouting for them to let me out. The ground was revolting, but I had no choice but to get on my hands and knees and crawl out from there. I was lost. Everyone had left without me. I was so freaking scared. Eventually, a teacher had found me and told me where the rest of the group was. Then I was reprimanded for not keeping up with everyone else, even after I said what had happened.

Wow.

This is pretty long. I'll continue with a part 2 tomorrow. Thank you and good night.

Bruh wtf I'm now so invested in this story.

Sounds like your time at camp was pretty rough! I'm glad you had a few friends there , though. I'm looking forward to seeing how the rest of the trip went!

Let me just say that if I ever went on a camping trip... I don't think I'd survive.

Oof. This sounds rough. Glad you had some friends, though.

Wowza, this is book worthy, honestly.

Reading this at a camp. Wish me luck.
