Hey all.
Someone asked me about the feasibility of space travel in the fallout setting. Since playing fallout 3 and new vegas as a kid, I was always drawn to the space-age technology you could find scattered around the wasteland. I reasoned humankind was on the brink of having colonies on Mars and elsewhere. Its told to you as much by some characters and you can read about it in a few terminals.
Its definitely hinted that the capabilities of human spaceflight in the fallouts 21st century are not far off from having colonies in our solar system. By 2075 there are Robco robots orbiting the solar bodies using Repconn rockets (New Vegas). The first manned mission to Mars using an ArcJet systems rocket was due to take place around the day the bombs fell on October 23rd, 2077. (Fallout 4)
That's not to mention some kind of space battle in the sea of tranquillity on the moon (fallout 4) or the military-grade satellites that can still function after 200 years. There are also aliens in the fallout universe (fallout 3, broken steel and mothership zeta DLC), so therefore advanced technology does exist within the lore, enough to travel great distances and the technology to safely put people in cryostasis.
Mr House in fallout new vegas mentioned if he could secure the Mojave wasteland, he said:
"Give me 20 years and I'll reignite the high technology development sectors. 50 years and I'll have people in orbit."
"100 years and my colony ships will be heading for the stars, to search for planets unpolluted by the wrath and folly of a bygone generation"
Therefore the technology exists or has the potential to. John is a direct descendant of the founder of the brotherhood. Sometime in the 24th century. Almost 400 years since the nuclear war.
Hope this clears things up.
it is a sad truth how human potential can suddenly end
