Lullaby for a Changeling · 7:44pm Oct 13th, 2019

Last evening, one of the stories I follow got updated with a new chapter (the story is Meet the Change Gang by BezierBallad). Not to go into too much detail for any of you who haven't read it, the story starts with King Thorax falling victim to poisonous gas and falling into a coma, and yesterday's chapter ended with Pharynx singing to him in his hospital room. The song wasn't specified in the chapter itself, but the author's notes say it was envisioned as Lullaby for a Princess, and the author said they would have written a modified version of the said song if the story were an audio drama. That gave me an idea, and I pieced something together while waiting for the series finale to start (I hadn't realized it was scheduled for what was 2 AM in my timezone, and by the way, yes I watched it by one of the internet streams, and it was perfect).

If anyone is interested, this is what I came up with (takes place shortly after Thorax's escape from the hive):

The Hive's ways are cruel, and violent, unkind;
You always have seeked another way.
You had to escape, but do be aware:
The Queen vows for vengeance today!

But into the darkness I'll bring you a song
And vigil for you I will keep;
So once in your life your worries can pass
And leave you alone in your sleep.

Once did a changeling most cunning and strong
Look out on his Queen and his Hive;
A vow he made to protect all his homeland,
His brethren and Queen, for the rest of his life.

So great was his will, determined his efforts,
Yet one thing he sadly forgot:
The troubles and pains of the brother he loved
That, each passing day, much more serious got.

Soon did that changeling take notice his brother
Was struggling to pull himself through,
But hardly had he loved him as he deserved;
He watched as his brother's unhappiness grew.

But strange this idea was of friendship to changelings,
Resisted it was at all cost;
And that foolish changeling did nothing to stop
The destruction of one who had needed him most!

Goodbye my brother, wherever you are,
And rest now in shadow's embrace!
Bear up my farewells, winds of the earth,
Through cloud, and through sky, and through space,

Carry the peace and the darkness of night,
And carry my sorrow in kind!
Thorax, you're loved so much more than you know;
May troubles be far from your mind,
And forever be safe from our kind!

The path now before you,
Trying and unknown,
I never imagined
You'd face it on your own!

May these endless perils
Swiftly pass, I pray;
I love you; I miss you
All these miles away!

May all your dreams bring ease tonight,
Heal your wounds under the starlight;
And know not of sadness, pain, or chafe,
And when I dream, I'll fly away and keep you safe!
Sleep...

I know it's far from perfect, and if anyone has any suggestions how to improve it, I'm all ears.

Also, if you like it, does any of you have a good singing voice and is willing to make a music video of this, with any improvements to the lyrics? Or do you know someone who might fit the description? :twilightsheepish:

This is hard to put into words, but I think you forgot the first chorus in the song that occurs before the second verse. If that makes sense.

I get what you're trying to say, but I didn't see the reason to repeat the same text twice, and anyway, people will probably get it. The lyrics for the original song on Google look like that (I know because I copy/pasted it to use as the base for my version while I type, so if it works fine on Google, this should too).

When you put it that way, I guess you’re right.
