A Silver Thread of Fate: Chapter 16 · 7:24pm Sep 20th, 2019
After last week’s surprise release of Chapter 15, I’ve been hard at work on Chapter 16. Lemme tell ya folks, this one is probably going to be a hell of a long one. Penny’s dream segment, co-starring Book and Luna, at the start took more than 3600 words alone... to say nothing of a major plot hook that takes place at the end of it the dream. Much excitement.
In other news, Penny has quickly found out in a recent battle that she can no longer rely solely on mid and close range combat as certain foes are far too powerful. How do you think she should round out her arsenal/abilities? Should she take up archery? Learn more long ranged spells with which to burn away magical energy? Or should she create a spell that can be used to create the magical equivalent of a rail-gun?
Give me your thoughts, dear readers.
Railgun like spell makes me thing that if she misses it'll destroy things it hits even if it does hit the enemies. Pong ranged spells for the archery thing is gonna need lots of concentration, shoot at the right moment and have to be calm under pressure even when the enemy rushes her... I don't know what to choose but maybe there could be a third or fourth option.

She could always throw smaller ponies at things. That would make them self-returning, and would likely have all sort of surprising effects while in flight or on impact! And they could ride around in her panniers to adorable effect!
"Who's hungry?"
"Me!"
"Me!"
"Me!"
"Me!"
"Wait, is that a small herd in your saddlebag?"
A spell where she makes physical clones
A spell to summon Screwball
I would definitely be interested in learning more about how magic works in your multiverse. So option two.
Wait, wouldn't a magical rail-gun spell also be a "more long ranged spell with which to burn away magical energy"?

The idea I’d been tossing around was for Penny to construct a spell that could be layered into an enchantment, which would create a field between the two anchoring gemstones. Anything that would pass through that field, it would have its velocity doubled. IE, a spear thrown through four such fields would reach velocities of what a railgun could achieve.

Hmm... imagine combining that with something volatile. Can she actually compress her magic into something else that's small enough to be launched but shatters upon impact? Like a mini magical ICBM of sorts.

Funny enough, I was screwing around with the math. With a few more layers, that reached Mach 53. By my understanding, that would practically vaporize both the spear and the target. Also I fudged the previous number. With just THREE such fields the spear would become a railgun projectile.
