I do tend to forget that 'Anon' exists as kind of a seperate entity with a fairly established personality on here, while I just sometimes use the name to fill the blank where a character's name should be.
Should probably just keep picking names at random...
Yay..........
I know it's kind of a "to each their own" situation, but I strongly dislike the "Anon" stories writers tend to create in fanfiction, and often pass them up when people write them. Some insist it's so people can better assimilate their own identities into the story, but I disagree. I can be Lotus, but I can also be Huck Finn, Robinson Crusoe, Celie, Scout, Ninny Threadgoode, and hundreds of others, all without having to insert my own identity into the mix.
I'd much rather read a story about how Mike, or Pete, or Lisa goes to Equestria rather than "Anon" ending up there, because that does throw me out of the story every time. It might as well just blatantly read "And then (INSERT NAME HERE) stepped onto the dias," than Anon, because it means the same thing.
Just my two bits.
To tell you the truth, as long as you are not using the stereotypical Anon meme it doesn't bother me at all. Besides you already explained it to my satisfaction:

Names are so utterly irrelevant to me and how I Make The Words that it really don't matter to me at all. I just saw it used here and thought it was a thing. Turns out it is, but not one without consequences, apparently.
Eh, live and learn.

Like I said, that's cool. You do what feels right for you. Its on me if I feel icky about it.
Yeah Anon, although loose, still have some established character elements that people associate with him. Anon isn't a self insert, but he isn't completely a developed character. He is a loose box of traits that you can assign to him and he just works.
If you think Tim or Steve would work, do that instead. Anon works well with comedy more anyways.
I've always had a preference for Anon as a name simply because it helps me avoid cringe-y self insert fics, since the author can't use their own name in the story and won't be as likely to indulge in the god awful content I associate with that stuff.
