Thing is - for me both antagonists (sciency-types and religious types) failed to deliver ponies ..uh, better humans? Adequate to current levels of collective power .... We know a bit about why we act so ... apeish, yet we have no bravery to act on ourselves (and what kind of acts actually needed is very much open question). Becoming better-than-average person will factually give you a lot of pain, and even disadvantages in current society. So, individual actions not really helping big picture - wrong types of humans lead all other humans wrong ways..not always, but often and systematically enough.

Consider that even now, because of mostly religious reasons, experimenting on anything human is prohibited. Cloning is prohibited. Genetic editing is prohibited. It's slowly moving towards allowing it, but, well, it'll be a long time before we come up with a better human. And even if we do, there's no guarantee that some idiot won't try to make a super soldier (basically, murderers perfect for murdering and no conscience about anything) or similar crap this world definitely doesn't need.
