The Dragon Prince · 3:50pm Sep 17th, 2018

From the same people who brought us the Avatar Franchise and the new Voltron reboot, we are now given another franchise thats set in a fantasy medieval setting (I'm sensing a pattern here thanks to Matt Groening's "Disenchantment.").

Having just watched the first season, what do I think of it? It's a good start, but I do the animation could be a little better. Maybe they were trying to translate the Studio Mir style in 3D. But there are just some things that don't translate well into CG unless there is a great dedication doing so (and is quite a worthwhile portfolio piece).

But I do care more about story, and it's still pretty good. Though I did make a few pop culture jokes and one slight pet peeve involving just rolling the dragon egg on the frozen lake. Sokka (well, his voice actor) basically got an upgrade from a bendless member of the Southern Water Tribe to a step-son prince who is just learning magic. He still has his humor as with the other characters consisting of his stepbrother (the biological son of the King), his pet bulldog frog, a moon elf, and a little girl with a 3 legged wolf as they make their way to the breach between Man's Country and Elf Territory.

There are some interesting side characters as well. The prince' aunt, the General Amia is mute, but she can still go full Dinobot with just a shield. Our antagonist' children are perhaps some of the goofiest I've seen, but it's not annoying one bit, just a little peculiar.

With Book One released (yes, they're going that route once more), I am gonna continue on with this. It's good in good in it's own right, and I'd love to see how this goes. I'd recommend you see it as well.

There are a series of pictures in the end credits of each episode that flesh out a little backstory. But as Netflix goes, you have to be quick to stop it jumping to the next episode.
