Question: If I update my old fimarchive with the xdelta3, will it remove all the stories that were deleted between updates?

Yes, though none were deleted for this release.
The patch is pretty much just a diff between the two ZIP-files. When you run xdelta3 it'll create an additional file, which should be exactly the same as if you had downloaded the new version by itself. You could verify this by using the MD5 checksum, or even by verifying the download through a torrent client.

I really dont understand what im supposed to do with a json file. I've tried so hard to view it and i just can't. i downloaded json viewer but that just tells me some garbage about the file being corrupted or some such nonsense. For the life of me i can't figure out the problem. Am i just stupid or what?

Sorry about that, and you're not stupid! A JSON file is format is mainly used by programmers because they're easy to use in most programming languages. It's pretty difficult to use if you aren't a developer though, especially since this one is so big.
You might be better off using the ODS spreadsheet. It should work in LibreOffice, Microsoft Office, Google Docs, or similar. It's not as complete, but contains a much of the information.
