My Thoughts On 'Matter Of Principals' (s8e14) · 3:33pm Jul 31st, 2018
What's up my friends!
So, I had a wild weekend at Bronycon which I will post about later today, but for now, I want to focus on the new episode that dropped. I got to watch it at the con itself, so it was a blast. For a mildly spoilered review, check below!
So, let's get this straight: An episode that features Starlight, Discord, Trixie, and Spike all in relatively important roles? Those are like... all in my top ten favorite characters! Starlight and Trixie being in my top 3! You better believe I was hyped when I figured that out.
So, as far as the plot goes, it was actually a really creative way to teach the "being left out sucks" and "listen to your friends" lesson! Long story short without giving away the ending, Twilight and co. have to go on a friendship mission so she puts Starlight in charge of the magic school after Spike declines the offer. Discord wanted a chance to be in charge though, so he gets a little pissy and causes mayhem.
Simple right?
Anyhow, let me tell you why I liked this episode. It was funny. The dialogue between the characters was gold, Trixie was great as always, and just some of the random shots they'd have, facial expressions and Discord gag jokes all hit tremendously. I had a blast watching it.
Also, the lesson it taught was very well-done and timeless in nature. It's important to listen to your friends and read between the lines at times. Of course, it also shows you can't just be a dick when you don't get your way, but at the same time, a little compassion and understanding goes a long way.
I have a few minor gripes, of course. The pacing was a little too quick, but understandable considering they have 22 minutes to work with. I also wished they'd have given more time to the side characters they brought in (Iron Will anyone?)
That all being said, it was definitely worth my time and a fun watch. You should totally check it out when you can.
Final Score: 8/10

I still think Discord showed exactly why he didn't deserve to be the one chosen.
