    Black Feather Project Update

The last month has been pretty crazy. My dog got a massive bladder infection and I had to spend $2000 on vet bills to get an ultrasound and all the nonsense that goes with that, all to get a prescription for $30 worth of medicine to fix the situation. Been kinda busy with that as well as upcoming holiday planning, etc.

    One more rewritten chapter

    Hey everyone.

Well, that last chapter took 3 weeks of hard work, mostly design, but nobody has commented on it so I can't tell how anyone feels about the story so far. I'm hoping people can share their thoughts because it helps me to know how the story is being received.

    More new characters

I've recently finished a scene where Dinky gets to know one of the platoon members. I find Dinky's POV to be fascinating to write, though all the Dinky POV scenes will be brand new content (for you old fans out there) because Dinky wasn't previously written into this part of the story. She's a fun character to see the world through. Innocent and naïve, happily venturing into things that

    Sergeant A.Pone

Alright, it's time for a shift of tone.

I had a pretty long chat with Duvet yesterday, and we decided that chapter eleven really does need a thorough rework from the 2018 version. This is the last of what I'd call my "weak writing". Chapters 12-21 are pretty much perfect, so if I can fix 11, this is going to mean great things for the story.

Friday Update #6 2018-05-25 · 4:16pm May 25th, 2018

Well, this week kicked off nicely. The comic was a great start to things, and a lot of folks on dA have enjoyed it. Additionally, the Black Feather group shot (as seen on my profile page) made it into this week's DrawFriend on Equestria Daily.

BDK has made Further progress with the comic by sketching out four additional pages, including 22 panels of various sizes. Detail and color work has just begun on these. What he's doing is making an abridged comic of chapter one (Induction). The first pages so far take us up to the end of Luna's dream warden duties where she helps the pegasus mare on the train.

On my end, I've made some pretty good progress on Of Friends and Nightmares, which was in much worse condition than I ever wanted to admit. This chapter... Man, I tell ya, it went through so many revisions before, but none of them really fixed the problems. I'm so happy with the rewrite of this chapter, I can barely express it. I can't wait to show you! So how far am I? Everything up until the point where our heroes spot the zebra sniper is finished.

I was considering reorganizing the action sequence where they take the sniper out, but my team informs me that the style I employed in the original actually works pretty well. So this means I'll simply go over the text to make sure it's up to current standards and then I'll be done. I anticipate having Friends and Nightmares posted on the forum for you all to read sometime early next week.

What's after this chapter? The next one for Black Feather is Life in the Battlefield, of course. This chapter I don't think will need much changing, if any, so it will very likely be quick to post. After that, Ruling by Moonline follows, and I'm very happy with that one as well. That might not need any rewrite work.

In addition to my Black Feather work, I am also itching to take a little break and write chapter two of The Bed. For anyone who isn't aware, this is a first-person romance story that I wrote a chapter for back in March just for something fun and different to do. It ended up being amazing, and I have a feeling it'll be a big hit. The story will be "Mature" rated, so that is a very new and different kind of thing for me to be working on. The story follows a human and a pony whose beds are connected via an interdimensional rift. And trust me, it's not nearly as corny as it sounds. Great care is being taken to give these characters the most authentic-feeling progression as possible.

In fact, if anyone wants to take an early look at the story, just pop me a PM. The Bed serves primarily as a learning experience for me in the art of creating an entirely unplanned story which develops organically. I know what these characters are like, as people, but I have no idea what they will choose to do or say until I write it. This is not my usual style, so it's definitely breaking into uncharted territory for me. It also serves to give me some good practice in strong descriptions and emotive storytelling -- two things Black Feather can make very good use of.

Lastly, a quick shout-out to my buddy DuvetofReason, who is my writing partner in the Harmony Universe. He's been spending the last two weeks working on a super secret project which will be his debut published story on Fimfiction when it is complete. This is a fairly short (about 20k words) story which has honestly astonished all of us on the development team with its creative vision and bold storytelling decisions. I won't spoil anything here, but everyone should definitely know that a really unique and rather dark story is coming down the pipe sometime soon. :pinkiehappy:
