    The Knife’s Edge

The other day I got a message from ZanarNaryon telling me they had created a TVTropes page for To Serve In Hell. Now, TVTropes can be a dangerous place to start reading, unless you have a few hours to spend getting lost in it. But if you want to check it out, please

Not with a bang, but a whimper

    Hey friends.

I didn’t used to believe in writer’s block as such. I always thought the phenomenon was a manifestation of something else in a person’s life. I also thought the cure for it was just to sit down and write any garbage you can. Editing should never mix with drafting, and if you can get yourself to stop editing, you’ll achieve more and better drafting—which can then be edited.

Ping 2: Live and In Person

Almost exactly 2.5 years ago, my family and I bought tickets to Whinny City Pony Con 2020. Of course there was no such con, at least not in a physical capacity. But good egg that he is, Charlie Worthley (con organizer extraordinaire) has made it effortless to transfer our tickets from that long-ago time to right now, despite all that’s transpired between.

    Ping

    I live.

    Time's gotten away from me.

2020 got weird. My 2021 started with an honest effort to get back to normal. But after I started getting treated for depression, I began to see more and more ways to improve things in my daily and family life that hadn't fit together very well in years. Including some of the core issues that had pointed me in the direction of MLP in the first place.

    Artistic Expression

It's been too long. Things are great. Really, really great. Not so much for writing, but for different modes of expression and life.

Time flies. I can hardly believe it was two years ago—right after Whinny City 2016—when a fellow called Pinky Music first asked me to pre-read a story. It was a HiE, which isn’t my usual cup of tea, but I remember enjoying what he’d written and offering some feedback. It wasn’t finished at the time but it was shaping up pretty well.

My 2016 and 2017 got pretty turbulent, though. I’ll spare you a rehash. Suffice it to say that I had to pull back on my overall involvement with lots of things. I still write because it helps keep me sane, and I still do the Writeoffs because they help keep me insane. :pinkiecrazy: But actual legit pre-reading/editing got really hard for me to keep up with consistently. I tried to help get Pinky connected-up with MisterNick, who’s done some good work helping with a few of my stories (plus he’s just a cool, offbeat, and easy-to-work-with guy). But after that, there came a point where I had to kinda let things go their own way. :applejackunsure:

It was a delightful surprise, then, to see chapters of Learning to Soar start popping up on Fimfiction a couple of days ago. It’s got a very emotional first few chapters, and it includes a promising lead-in to its HiE scenario. Again, I’m not usually much for HiEs, but I liked how this approached the concept. And that setup looks like it’s evolved some since I last read it.

I believe that Pinky was planning to wait until the story was finished before he started posting it. I know (or reasonably believe after having read them a long ways back) that there are at least several more chapters ready to go that comprise a good chunk of an arc. Hopefully we’ll get to see those posted in due course.

Anyway, check it out if you’re so inclined, and maybe even give the HiE thing a chance it you’re like me and the genre’s not your usual thing. I’ve enjoyed what’s out there already, and I’m looking forward to seeing the rest!
