Being Eclectic, and a recommendation! · 3:38am Oct 16th, 2012

First, a fic recommendation:

Lethe! Do you like Stephen King? Do you like Vampires? Have you ever read Dracula? Are you a magical colorful equine who is afraid of those things?

If any of those was just answered yes, head on over. This is a Pony crossover with one of my favorite books: 'Salem's Lot. The author is doin' an alright job over there and it deserves more attention than it is getting. If nothin' else, it might be worth it to add a bit of vampirey adventure to your diet. With no sparkles, please.

Anyhow, the main thrust of the blog: Being Eclectic!

Today, I held two CDs in Walmart. In my left, I held a CD with this song on it:

(I HAVE A MANCRUSH FOR MARTY ROBBINS AND I WOULD BE GAY FOR HIS VOICE YES PLEASE I WANT)

In my right hand, I had this CD:

Now that we've established my eclectic tastes in music...

I've seen my eclectic tastes in just about everything to be a strength. I know EXACTLY the kind of feel that I like from things, and I can blend the strengths of disparate genres together to help strengthen whatever I'm doing! My music for The Spring Nostalgic is definitely folk-flavored, but it has a decidedly alternative streak as well. I write shipping.... BUT I also write grimdark stuff (as you guys have noticed.)

What do y'all think about being eclectic in writing? Would you rather a writer do lots of different things or would you rather him specialize and hone the art of the horror/action/adventure/romantic tale? I'm half and half on it myself. Thoughts?

And do you also have eclectic tastes in the musics?

PS: Rarijack comes soon, and I'm working on what comes next.

Being eclectic (and being good at it) is a tell-tale sign of a good writer in my opinion. Look at Stephen King: he can write horror, fantasy, thriller, and simple drama. I've never seen him write romance or comedy, but I feel like he'd do comedy well (he's a pretty funny sonuvabitch). I mean, I've made it my goal to tackle as many genres as I can. I write adventure and dark, tragic tales, but I also write silly romantic comedies. I'm not sure how good I am at any of them, but it's still my goal.

And my music taste is eclectic as they come. My iTunes includes: Mumford and Sons, Brand New, In Flames, Rush, Bob Dylan, Jay Z, Pink, Sigur Ros, Bon Iver, Rancid, Green Day, M83, Nine Inch Nails, Johnny Cash, the list goes on ad nauseam.

(and I'll be done with RariJack edits by tomorrow evening :raritywink:)

Stephen King's humor writing would be black humor still. :P

You know... what if Stephen King has actually written several drugstore romance novels under a psuedonym? He's written under a pseudonym before

:applejackconfused: Mother of Nicholas Cage and all that is holy, Stephen King wrote 50 Shades of Grey! :raritydespair:

425292 That would explain how horrifying it is.....

Hey, the Dragon born is an example of an extremely eclectic person that's awesome. Become the writing Dragon born.
