MLP The Movie: REVIEW! · 2:43am Oct 28th, 2017

Before I start with this, let's put a warning in here:

THERE ARE SPOILERS OF THE MOVIE IN HERE SO IF YOU HAVEN'T WATCHED IT YET GO TO THE NEAREST CINEMA, WATCH IT AND THEN COME BACK!!! DON'T SAY I DIDN'T WARNED YOU!!!

Okay, I'm going to let something clear:

I FREAKIN' LOVED THE MOVIE!

After SO long waiting for it I can say it was worth the wait. Really. Worth. The wait.

Sooooo... Let's go in order, okay?

THAT intro! It was so Awesome! I mean the one where there's this cool spark that makes the shape of 'THE MOVIE' and then appears these three pegasi flying with the cool background song (They got the beat! They got the beat! Yeah, they got the beat!) and they go to Canterlot and the whole Frienship Festival appears. It was so cool!

This Pegasus mare saying Twilight can handle the Festival and then appears Twilight saying she totally cannot handle the Festival. I laughed so hard in this part. And then Twilight explaining to the Princesses what she needed of them and Celestia telling her 'no' ever so subtly. Priceless.

Then comes the Mane 5: Preparing for the Festival. As usual, we can see Rarity handling the decoration (why do you even out gems in the decoration of a stage? Aren't they think about thieves?), Pinkie the Party Part, Fluttershy the music, Applejack the banquet and Rainbow Dash the weather. I mean, it was expected. Nothing to point out in this.

BUT when Rarity tells Rainbow about the barn thing and A.J goes all over "I wasn't raised in a barn" but realizes herself with facts tat she actually was raised in a barn... I think it was one of my favorite scenes in the whole movie.

Then Twilight shows up and tells them how worried she is about nothing going the way it should, Pinkie Pie telling her the Pinkie way she shouldn't be worrying and...

TIME FOR THE FIRST SONG!

We got this: I'm still singing it when I take showers. I do the same with all the songs. Anyway. This starts with a very cool tune and Applejack has the first verse. Neat. This goes as the different ways the Mane 5 tell Twilight she shouldn't be worrying about anything. My favorite parts were Dash's and Twilight's verses. Dash's was simply awesome and soooo reassuring and Twilight's gave me chills of just how it perfectly pictured her concerns. I'm a little disappointed that they didn't gave Fluttershy any verse, just a choir. I mean, she has one of the best voices in the whole cast and that's how they picture her in the cartoon. It was kind of the only thing I didn't liked in this song. That aside, I learned the lyrics after listening it five times. It was pretty cool.

After this song (that ends quite messy with Pinkie's Party-Cake-Cannon, someone we all have been expecting appears: Songbird Serenade! Better know as Sia.

I'm not exactly a fan of Sia since the only songs of her that I've heard are Chanderlier and Rainbow from the movie, but I was excited of watching her. I really liked her character (specially how she handled Photo Finish).

And then... Everything goes to h*ll.

Storm clouds. Thunder. A huge ship that somehow noone saw coming even if being so huge. And... A overweight-spiky-thing shows up and introduces himself as Grubber. I swear I had so much trouble understanding what he was saying. I mean, my native language isn't English and I was watching the movie in English without subtitles (proud of myself for understanding all of it), so the way this guy talked made it hard for me to understand him. But anyway...

Here comes a moment I was expecting to be so cool, and ended up being cooler than I thought: Our antagonist, Tempest Shadow, shows up. I swear she was the coolest, sassiest antagonist ever and I loved her so much. Emily Blunt, congratulations. You did it amazingly.

We have evil little speech (coolest evil speech ever!), Princesses facing Tempset Royal-like and Luna stupidly saying something that makes everything worst.

And massive dogfight. It. Was. Amazing.

But I want to point something out: When Tempest threw this magical orb to Celestia, Celestia just stood there and did nothing to stop it. It was Cadence who reacted first, causing her to become an obsidian statue. Why the hell Celestia didn't reacted?! I mean, it was coming directly at her, why she didn't even tried to stop it!? Was she expecting that a Royal guard threw himself in the way of the orb or what!? Maybe she got too used to being safe and sound in her castle and got a little rusty. Girl, go out and fight dangers like you subjects.

Here's another thing: The mane 6 could have ended with this very quickly with something very easy to notice: Rainbow Power. I mean, you are the freakin' Bearers of the Elements of Harmony! Couldn't you just... Go Rainbow Power like and such? I know there wouldn't be a movie if they did so, but still...

Anyway, The three Princesses get turned to obsidian and Twilight tries scaping with her friends, but end but ruining a bridge and them all fall to a waterfall. Very smart Twily! And couldn't Rainbow, Fluttershy and Twilight just fly and get the rest on their backs or something? Instead of letting themselves fall endlessly...

So, Twilight goes all "I have to fix up this mess" and uses psychology to get her friends to come along. Very smart, girl. And they all go south to look for the 'Queen of the Hippos'. Did anyone noticed that they crossed all of Equestria in less than a day? And that they probably passed by Ponyville and didn't stopped to take supplies for the trip? No? Anyone?

Meanwhile, Tempest receives a call from the Storm King who I, personally, found as a very childish and out-of-it villain. He was very... Crazy. Not Pinkie-like crazy, more... I don't know how to describe him...

So, Tempest talks with him and explain him that with the three Princesses powers will make him the supreme ruler and will make him able to fix her horn. I saw things going bad since here.

Then we go back to our favorite Ponies (and baby dragon). It seems like too much sun doesn't goes well with Pinkie, since we have a moment of crazy Pinkie. Then, they arrive at a city. Apparently, according with the IDW comics, they got Abyssinia, to a specific city called Klungletown, where "everything has it's price". Kind of remind me of the Griffins. So, anyway, we got to see a very, very cool cat: Capper. I swear, I fell in love with Capper. He's so... Charming...

Kungketowners or however they called them try to kidnap the mane 6 and Spike, but Capper shoos them if telling they have a very rare disease (which, apparently, the whole Equestria would have).

AND TIME FOR THE SECOND SONG!

I'm the Friend You need: A tango, a very cool tango which was something I've never seen or heard. I just loved it. This went as Capper trying to make the ponies trust him telling them he was their friend and that he would take care of them (pff, like they were some mares in distress). Really liked this, don't have a lot to add.

Once in Capper's house, this guy tries to distract them with chats and such to make them stay until Verko, with whom he has a huge debt, arrives. But Rarity shows him what is generosity (yay Rarity!) and puts him in deep thought. Meanwhile, Twilight founds out they're supposed to search for the Hippogriffs instead of the Hippos and also that they live in Mount Aris —which conviently can be seen from Capper's window.

Here we have a lesson, kids: Don't trust strangers. He would try to sell you, which would end up in your pursuers finding you and you would have to scape using an old windmill. Really. Don't trust strangers.

So, somehow, our ponies end up in a ship with parrots that once were pirates. And Rainbow Dash, obviously, thinking the fact they were pirates who actually just robbed things they actually needed, gives them a speech of "Don't let anyone tell you what you you have to do".

AND THERE COMES THE THIRD AND PROBABLY THE BEST SONG IF THE WHOLE MOVIE!

Time to be Awesome: I'm so freaking happy they gave Dashie a whole song where she was, technically, be main voice. In the cartoon they don't give her many screen time and songs, so I'm very glad they decided to do so in the movie. This was such a cool song with a very cool tune and very cool lyrics. Probably will remember this song for the eternity and beyond.

But here comes Dashie's stupidity. She makes a Rainboom and Temoest, Grubber and Capper (who decided to turn to ponies' side and help them scape but was taken captive because of that) see it. I so wanted to punch Dash in the face. They turn around and go after the ship where Celaeno, her crew and the ponies are. When they see them approaching, Celaeno hides them in the interior of the ship —where Rainbow ask Twilight if she thinks they saw her Sonic Rainboom— at the time Tempest and her minions and Capper arrive.

With Twilight's quick thinking, they manage to scape from the ship using a makeshift Hot air Balloon. Again, Fluttershy refuses to use her wings. In the airship, meanwhile, Tempest punishes Celaeno, her crew and Capper by destroying the airship with them inside.

The mane 6 and Spike arrive at Mount Aris to find nothing it the supposed Capital of the Hippogriffs. Following the track of a misterius singing, they end up in a pretty cave-lagoon-like thing, where they are pulled into Seaquestria, home of the Seaponies.

Princess Skystar greets them, conviced to trust them when they tell her that the Storm King is destroying their home, and takes them to her mother, who ends up being Queen Novo, the Queen of the Hippogriffs, who turned all of her subjects into sea ponies to save them from the Storm King's claws. Loved the "I'm the Queen, I know everything" Novo's line.

So, using a magical Pearl (how convenient), Novo turns our dear ponies into Seaponies and Spike into a blowfish. When Twilight ask Queen Novo to help her to save Equestria using the Pearl, Novo rejects her, telling that even if she is so very sorry of what is happening to her Kingdom, her responsibility lays with her subjects and that the Pearl is not going anywhere. And then, Queen Novo is called to have a beauty treatment and goes away, leaving Skystar with the Mane 6.

Skystar proposes to the ponies to stay forever in Seaquetria, but feels very sad when they tell her they can't stay. Pinkie, noticing how sad she looked, ask if they could stay jus liiiiiitle longer and Twilights accepts —hiding her true intentions when she sends her friends to cheer up Skystar.

AND TIME FOR YET ANOTHER SONG!

One Small Thing: Will probably put this song on when feeling sad. This was very heart warming and so nice from Pinkie. Very cheerful, it goes on with Pinkie and the Mane 4 cheering up Skystar (Christin Chenoweth did perfectly Skystar) and sharing some time with her —which ends up in Queen Novo accepting helping them!

But... Here comes Twilight's stupity. Using her friends as a distraction, she tries to steal the Pearl, but gets caught red-hooved, which ends up on her and her friends being banished from there.

Once in the beach, A.J ask Twilight just what the hay was she thinking, which ends up in a huge fight between Pinkie and Twilight where Twilight says some very hurtful words. They part ways, the mane 5 and Twilight with Spike, and in the meantime where Twilight's blaming herself, she gets captured by Tempest. How lucky.

We see Tempest mocking Twilight telling her: "The Princess of Friendship... With no friends".

AND TIME FOR. THE. BACKSTORY. SONG!!!

Open up Your Eyes: I swear I cried with this one. Tempest backstory is so touching and so sad. It wasn't her fault! But loosing her horn at such a short age really left a deep scar (emotionally and literally). And this song was just so perfect and... *cries heavily*.

After this very cool song, Twilight is brought back to Canterlot while Spike tells the Mane 5 that Teilight has been captured and they all team up with Capper and the Pirates (who somehow survived the explosion of the ship) and, shortly after, Skystar.

In Canterlot, Twilight meets the Storm King, who demostrated to be even more childish that I thought, and is drown out her magic with the other three Princesses'. And, as I expected, the Storm King betrays Tempest and fights her, resulting in her holding for dear life to the balcony's railing. Here, instead of choosing taking the scepter that would have ended everything, she chooses to help Tempest, showing her what real Friendship is.

At the same time, Capper, the Pirates, Skystar, Spike and the ponies use a huge cake to get in Canterlot, where they have to fight of Storm King's minions in order to get to the Castle: using Spike as an weapon and Pinkie's huge cannon to get in.

They arrive (and crash land) at the perfect time and the Mane 6 work together to get the scepter, but Pinkie looses grip of Twilight at the same time she takes the scepter and her and Storm King are pulled into de the storm. A few very dramatic (and I mean Rarity-like dramatic) seconds pass until Twilight flys down to them... But they have yet other problem.

The Storm King appears and throws an orb to Twilight, but Tempest gets in the way of it and is turned to obsidian —but manages to turn the Storm King into obsidian too in the process!

What I liked about this particular scene was how the Mane 5 surrounded Twilight in order to protect her from the Storm King. Rainbow Dash even spreaded her wings defiantly! They were sure that Twilight could help them if they were turned into obsidian by the orb and were convinced to protect her until the end even if that costed them a high price. And then Tempest is like "I don't think so" and actually sacrifices herself for Twilight and her friends even if fifteen minutes ago she was trying to defeat them.

Twilight catches her with the magic of the scepter, while Storm King falls to the ground and shatters, and using the scepter's contained magic they turn Tempest back to normal and restore everything, bring back the Princesses, and everything goes well again! They even have the Friendship Festival! (And somehow, the stage for Songbird Serenade's concert is untouched).

This is pretty much how the Movie ends. Right after Temoest tells the ponies her real name: Fizzlepop Berrytwist! Now that was unexpected!

I want to point out that, during the dance battle in the credits, Twilight's dances exactly like she danced in Equestria girls during the Fall Formal! It was hilarious!

So... Long story short, I really liked- no, I loved the Movie! It was so full of great scenes and cool stuff and locations: IT WAS AMAZING!

I loved the animation and the style they used: The ponies looked so cute! Specially Rainbow, if I say so myself... (Totally not quoting Capper).

Well... That was long. I wanted to get it all outta mah chest because I just couldn't keep it inside anymore. I NEEDED THE WORLD TO KNOW THAT I SAW MLP THE MOVIE, THAT I LOVED IT, THAT I'M A BRONY AND I'M PROUD OF THAT!

You've been able to see it in English in Spain? How lucky! Here, in France, it happened that theaters had two versions, one in French and one in English but all decided not to show the movie in English at all! :ajbemused: So I've been obliged to watch it in the very so-so French version... BUT I enjoyed it anyway, despite a few flaws (many of which you already pinpointed in your review). I also share the same opinion than you about King Storm: he's stupid! The real interesting antagonist definitely was Tempest (could mean "you stink" in French, so I kinda laughed each time they called her name). I was "shocked" during Pinkie's lecture to Twilight, because it reminded me about her lecture to Dashie in the "Rainbow's Blues" arc of The Truth About Girl... But I digress here! Sorry :twilightblush:

Well, anyway, great review and I globally share your opinion about the movie

4710077
You stink? Really? LOL That was unexpected :rainbowlaugh:

Yeah. Turns out, I saw the movie in English in my home, but went with my best friend to see it in theaters. She was making fun of me for being so excited, but then she got all excited too, so...

That's how I saw it in both, English and Spanish (gotta say, the translation was better than I expected. In the cartoon, it sucks since season 5)

I think I have the link of the site where I saw the movie in English laying around somewhere, do you want me to send it to you?

Also, just a question, what does the your profile pic says? I get it's french, so do you mind if I ask what does it says?

4710452
Well, yeah... "Tu empestes" could be contracted as "t'empestes", which basically means... Well, you stink! :rainbowlaugh:

Truth is, I was pretty excited too although I'm a full grown woman (yeah, doesn't sound like, I know) and also was relieved when I saw other female Bronies in the theater.

That's very nice of you, but I think I'll wait patiently until it's alvailable in DVD, hoping we would have an English version in it... If not, then I'll probably ask you for that link, after all

Oh, it's "Attack of the Killer Tomatoes", which happened to be a (very) silly old movie that's a parody of horror movies such as "The Blob" :pinkiehappy:

4711444
Never seen that movie. I'm not a fan of horror movies *shrugs*.

Also, I just noticed. I'm not from Spain, I'm from Ecuador, in South America. I watched the movie in English in my home with the link I told you about, but in Latin Spanish I saw it on the theaters :raritywink:

Well, that sure is going to be hilarious in the theaters. I would have liked to see that. Translation problems, I guess :rainbowlaugh:

4711456
Although Wikipedia says it's "horror comedy", there's nothing shocking at all in this nonsense... except if you count complete ridiculousness as horror :rainbowlaugh: I swear that's the silliest (yet funny) movie I've ever seen.

My bad! Yeah, I've realized how silly I was thinking spanish = Spain, when there are so many countries where that's the official language. I'm very sorry about it :fluttercry:

Well, each time they called her "Tempest", I couldn't help thinking "that's not nice saying this to her", especially as they all said it with a terrible French accent.

4711481
No prob, it happens a lot to us latin american people :rainbowlaugh:. And, after all, my country is so tiny that in Korea they think it's part of Colombia! :rainbowlaugh:

In here, they called Tempest as the literal traduction of her name. Really, instead of using "Tempest" (as in the trailer was used) they used literally "Tempestad". Tempest in spanish. Also "Rey Tormenta" instead of "King Storm". Very bad traduction in that, actually :rainbowlaugh:

4711514
That's because I was secretly hoping your were on the same time zone than me :rainbowlaugh:

It must be a little tiring, no? (Well, at least they DO know Ecuador is a country... I can name persons around me who don't. Once, my brother asked me whether Singapour was actually in France :rainbowhuh:)

Oh, so, in Ecuador they translate the name of the ponies? In France, they only say them with a cringy French accent)

4711524
Hahahahaha! What time is it in there. Here's 2:10 p.m right now.

Well, my Natural Science teacher is dating a man who is from Korea (don't remember with one). She says that when they talked for the first time (date site), he literally had no idea what was Ecuador. She got out a map and showed him our tiny country, and her now boyfriend showed him a Korean map of South America (does that makes sense?) and, literally, Ecuador didn't existed. The territory of Ecuador was part of Colombia (to the north) and it was like they were just one country.

So... It does not surprise me that a lot of people don't know what is Ecuador (even if we are one of the greatest Banana and Cacao exporters, ha!).

There's actually one translation for the whole Latin America (from Mexico to Argentina, so the whole Central America, Caribbean and South America), but the names in the cartoon are in English. It just... Seems like they couldn't decide in the Movie :rainbowlaugh: since all the names were in English except for those two's. Even 'Fizzlepop Berrytwist' was in English, really. They just mistook it in there. But, do you remember that gag in Tanks for the Memories were the pegasi were talking to each other accidentally telling each other's names? With Clear Skies, something-that-I-forgot Skies and Fluffly Clouds? Well, those names were translated literally, because otherwise it would have been able the joke. It was pretty silly, but I guess the translators didn't had an option.

2:22 p.m. This took a lot to write :rainbowlaugh:

4711555
It's 8:40 p.m here in France...

Well, that's... I mean, how could that be possible? It's completely geographically inaccurate! Do they learn this at school? :rainbowderp:
One thing is sure, is that now, your Natural Science teacher's boyfriend KNOWS about Ecuador.

OK, it's a bit strange yet funny. And it might have sounded weird during the movie. Makes me think I've never seen how they managed with that joke in French (it was Open Skies... I remember him because I've used it in Only One Speck of Dust as Rainbow Dash's former something who died despite Applejack efforts :rainbowlaugh:)

4711572
Hmmm... Almost a 6 hour difference. He, that explains how sometimes I get notifications from you at midnight :rainbowlaugh:

Well, it seems. I mean, a all grown man didn't knew what was an 'Ecuador'. They should check their school system.

Open Skies, that was it! Right! Well, in Spanish he was "Cielo Abierto". Do you noticed that Clear Skies actually appeared in the Movie? (Especial somepony? Died despite A.J's efforts? That's sad and funny, I feel awful for finding it kind of funny. I've seen Only One Speck of Dust in your stories, but I don't read mature rated stories, so...)

4711576
Yes :rainbowlaugh: When I publish The Truth About Girls it's around midnight (or 1 p.m at the max) because it seems like a good hour for the American (North and South) readers. But my blog posts are generally written in the middle of day

I never would have thought something like that could be true... It's shocking!

Oh no, I haven't seen this detail! In which circumstances does he appear? Only One Speck of Dust is rated M because of some gory descriptions during the fights, but there's no clop. The story hasn't been much popular but it's still a story dear to my heart (also my very first MLP fanfictions).

4711594
We'll calculated! I get the notifications from TTATG around 4:00 p.m or near.

Me neither, I found it a little bit stupid. I mean, they got smaller counties in their map, and not us? That was silly.

Around the beginning of the Movie, right before this other mare says Twilight can handle the Festival. She says that The Festival is Amazing and blablabla.

4711599
OK, so we'll see this tomorrow :raritywink:

How could a whole country ignore the existence of another one, and yet know the position of , for example, very small islands at the same time?

I'll look closely when I'll see the movie another time. You got the eye! Have you seen Rainbow Dash sulking when they're escaping the pirate's boat and Twilight takes her and forcefully puts her into the hot-air-balloon-like crate? She's so cute! :rainbowkiss:

4711619
We'll see!

That's something that'll never get. Korea stuff, I guess. I have three friends that are huge K-pop fans and they're so upset because BTS it's not coming to Ecuador in their tour. They're literally going to Colombia and doing a whole jump from there to get to Peru —skipping totally Ecuador :rainbowlaugh:

YES I NOTICED! She looked so cute!!

4711859
I myself been a K-pop fan for a very long time and... yes, that's a very Korean thing! It's lucky they go in Peru or Columbia now, since for a very long time they considered touring Asia as "World Tours"... Some Korean persons think Paris is a country... Might not be easy to see International artists in concert in Ecuador, if they always skip it... :rainbowderp:

And yet, I've looked at pictures of your country and there seems to have very beautiful landscapes and cities

4712141

they considered touring Asia as "World Tours"

Wow, that's sad.

Do you live in Paris?! Oh, I've always loved that place! It's SO Beautiful! I have the Eiffel Tower all around my school supplies! I just love that city!

Yeah, yo can't really see a very good concert in here :twilightoops:. That's why I already gave up wishing my favorite group to come here :applejackunsure:

Well, we have some pretty places. Galapagos is beautiful everywhere, my big brother went on a business trip there and told me a lot about it. We have some cool beaches too, waterfalls and Los Andes mountain range, etc. So there's a lot to see... But I haven't seen with my very eyes much of it :twilightsheepish:

4712426
Really sad!

I used to live in Paris... when I was studying Korean in University! I just LOVED living there, there are so many things to do, to see, the speed... Although I'm the only one I know who loves living there. Now, I'm back in my hometown, Bordeaux, where there is more to see and to do than drinking wine! :rainbowlaugh:

Sounds amazing! You made me want to come and visit Ecuador!

4712435
"Drinking wine" :rainbowlaugh: I've heard is a usual hobby there :rainbowlaugh:

Wow! You are really far from Paris. Went to see where Bordeaux was in Google :rainbowwild:

The very few places I've went to (I travel three or four times a year, and I always go to the same places) are full of things to see. I'm sure you would like it.

4712461
It is an guess what... I don't like even wine! :rainbowlaugh:

We're far from Paris but with the high-speed train now we can reach Paris in only two hours! There are many monuments to visit, it's the second city with the largest number of monuments, right after Paris, in fact

I think I'll add Ecuador to the list of countries I want to visit!

4712468
Once read a book that took place in Paris... I just couldn't believe how many times they mentioned wine!:rainbowlaugh: I know a French man that drinks wine almost everyday in dinner, he was my big brother's boos. Every time he and his wife go to visit his family, that lives in a town near Paris, they bring me a Eiffel Tower-realted souvenir.

If you come here, I recommend Quito, Cuenca and Galapagos. They are full of things to see (and there are so many monuments and museums in the first two! I still haven't visited them all! I love monuments and museums . Galapagos is full of beautiful beaches and sea animals!)

4712483
Well, yeah... A lot of French people actually love drinking wine every single day. There are many things about Paris and French people which are mere clichés, but not wine!

Gosh! You know what? I just love museums and monuments as well!

4712500
Like mimes?

That's awesome! Then you will like it! We have a lot of museums all around the country.

4712509
Oh yeah, mimes are a good example! Or, like, you know, a beret and a bread under the arm!

That's awesome! When I went to South Korea, I've only visited museums and monuments  Culture and beautiful landscapes are the best things about tourism.

4712531
Oh, but I like berets! They are cool!

Well, good thing then. You'll find both here :raritywink:
