Now the Desktop just flat out isn't loading. It either freezes mid-loading or just won't load at all...

Load up a ubuntu livecd, copy the users folder, and reinstall, I'm assuming windows?

I would ask to see it working before you buy it and I like the Linux idea to backup your data as well.
Sounds like ram or hdd is messed up or just a bad windows update. I take it safe mode won't load either?
Use a Linux boot disc. PM me if you need help locating and using one. It will boot up a copy of a bare-bones Linux solely through your disc drive so you can locate the issue and/ or backup your data safely.

I need one... I managed to log in, but now text files are showing up badly warped. The context is still there, it just either rearranges it or doesn't load the text of anything, even the taskbar.

This did all start with a windows update. Before it was just a little slow... Dunno how to get into safe mode on this thing.

Get into advanced boot options and then follow this. Does the failed boot up blue screen show up right now?
