Re-Read of Book 5 - Crash Down · 4:18am Sep 11th, 2017
Typos, Typos, Typos!
The beginning of this book is quite nice! I remember really loving my writing of all the Avenport stuff. While I was writing it, I remember the Gryphonstone episode was a recent one, and I thought it was freaking stupid. I still kind of do. I don't like how everything is seemingly in Equestria so often. I preferred to think that the gryphon kingdom was another nation entirely.
As usual, here's my random thoughts and memories.
The later half of this book is paced pretty badly and tries to do too much. I hope I can improve as I continue Pinked.
The idea of the hotel came from Negima, where they have a training resort with slowed down time.
Rainbow Dash and Daring Do's wind shear attack is so confusing.
The resolution with the reset swarm is still satisfying to me. I wanted her to solve her problem by punching something in the face so hard it blew up. Mission accomplished.
In contrast, the reset swarm itself is meh.
Duval and Morosa are great, but I find myself less impressed by Morosa this time. The flashback with him and Mulcibar feels like pointless fluff to me now, and the way he gets completely schooled was just disappointing. At least Duval put up a fight.
Speaking of Duval, I love how focused and evil he is, but I think I was trying to be purposely too evasive about the Touch of Ismara. Once it was revealed, though, it was perhaps not explained as well as it could have been.
Luna/Nightmare Moon stuff feels unnatural. I pumped up Luna as powerful within other dreams, and then she basically got defeated by residual magic of her own making until Dash figured her lucidity out.
There are so many typos in the last 3 chapters here, it's atrocious.
My love of clopfic bled in hard in the end of this book, but I think I still kept it contained to teen rated comedic antics more than anything in the normal version of this chapter, and the mature version just had a couple differences. I don't think I got too carried away, except with Daring Do hitting on the bartender. That was just silly!
Okay so overall, I'd say getting through the last three chapters of this one was sort of a slog for me. Maybe it wasn't so bad for people following it to read updates occasionally.
Moving into Intermezzo 4 now, and it's time for Trixie and Ponyville.
I'll be doing one more of these blog posts once I finish reading the last chapter of Pinked, and then... it's crunch time. I just hope Pinked isn't as rough as these last few chapter of crash down. The pacing, man, I'd love to go a bit quicker. I bet on a rewrite I could condense the last half of Crash Down a bit more.
Wait, it's not? I don't remember them establishing that in the episode. Maybe I just blocked it out.
