Re-read of Horizons plus Intermezzo 2 · 1:38am Sep 5th, 2017
Here's my thoughts, once again. As a reminder, I am re-reading TCoL with the intention of continuing it in a big way when I get done reading it again.
- The first half of this book goes pretty smooth and pretty fast. I was very into doing these back and forth scenes if things were happening simultaneously. I'm not sure I'd do it that way these days. Maybe. Who knows.
- The voice of Nightmare Moon leading into her appearing as a villain was something I wanted to do since I started the story and came up with overarching plotlines. I love the concept of Discord being able to interact with them because he's asleep in his statue, and I love the idea of Nightmare Moon literally being an evil being that lives inside Luna. Indeed, I recall weaving this into the next book pretty heavily. I'd honestly forgotten about some of this stuff in the past two years, and reading it has reignited the parts of my brain that loved this plotline. It feels like Linnai and Ismara had kind of taken over my brain.
- I guess that's why it's good to go over this again before starting writing again.
- The later parts of this book, especially the last two or three chapters, are kind of a speedy mess. I think if I ever revisit to rewrite this book, I'll try and make things more clear.
- Rainbow Dash and Scootaloo's dad being inside the same body in the dream world is so weird. I think that was part of why I did it, though. Like, I feel like dreams should be inexplicable when viewed from the outside. Yet, when you're having the dream, it feels completely normal.
- The idea of losing the memories from inside the dream came from the very real problem of forgetting dreams quickly after waking up, even if upon waking, the dream felt important in your head. I've woken up before and said "Wow, that was an incredible dream. I must make note to remember this," but then I will forget it. I guess that's why people keep dream journals.
- Vitra's interactions with Chrysalis feel odd, but vague enough to be fine. Confession time: I didn't come up with the idea of her being Chrysalis' daughter until later on after this, probably about halfway through writing Corruption.
- Vitra hears a voice telling her that her nightmare was about to begin. At the same time, Chrysalis says the nightmare is almost over. I remember what those lines are about, but the time to reveal it has not quite yet come.
Anyway, on to Corruption, a section of the story I enjoyed writing immensely. Crafting the past of Luna and Celestia and tying it together with the changelings was so gratifying.
I'll post another one of these when I've finished reading that book.
I salute you for wading back in to so many words.
