Doctor Perseus Reviews: MLP S7E6 "Forever Filly" · 5:40pm May 18th, 2017
Another late review so let's just jump into it.
I really enjoyed this episode. It's been a while since we last had an episode that focused on Rarity and Sweetie Belle's relationship. I believe the last episode that covered this was For Whom the Sweetie Belle Toils all the way back in Season 4 (but if there's been another since then that I'm forgetting, feel free to remind me). I suppose you could also consider this our first CMC episode of the season (and the first episode this season that they've spoken, if I'm correct).
Since I'm an only child I can't entirely relate to a lot of dilemmas that involve siblings in stories. But, from what I can gather, I imagine this episode perfectly shows the issues siblings can face as they grow older. The nostalgic older sibling wanting to relive their activities together whilst the younger sibling is moving in to more mature things. Though I suppose the message in this episode can apply to any sort of relationship of its kind. Like a parent and a child, for instance. Either way, I think the message was handled pretty well and I liked how Zipporwhill's conflict with her dog mirrored Rarity's conflict with Sweetie Belle. A nice way to tie the A and B plots together.
We seem to be seeing a lot of returning guest characters this season. First it was Big Daddy McColt in the last episode. Now we've seen the return of Zipporwhill (who hasn't been seen since Season 4) and Sassy Saddles (who hasn't been seen since Season 5). It was nice to see them both and they both got some pretty good scenes in this episode. I wonder who else we'll see return this season. Cheese Sandwhich maybe?
Overall, again, I really liked this episode. A very nice bonding episode for Rarity and Sweetie Belle.
What did the rest of you think of Forever Filly?
Would you consider this episode to be somewhat of a sequel to Sisterhooves Social?
Something to note about this episode is that not only is it the first of the season written by the Fox Brothers (Michael P. and Wil), but it's notably the first episode they've written for the series that wasn't a collaboration. In all three of the episodes they've written for last season, the story for each of them is credited by another writer (as listed below) so it was nice to see what the brothers could accomplish on their own here.
* The Gift of the Maud Pie: Josh Haber
* Applejack's "Day" Off: Neal Dusedau
* P.P.O.V. (Pony Point of View): Kevin Burke and Chris Wyatt.
I don't know if you read my review, but I also enjoyed this episode. My sister and I are close to the same age, so I've never experienced what Rarity goes through here. My sister actually once dragged me to an experimental black box theater work. I still want that hour of my life back.
