So lately I've been reading the IDW comics and I've had some mixed views on them. On one end the premise of many of them are very good but on the other end how it is carried out tends to be rather poor. More often than not the whole plot is derailed by a giant hole that you can drive the Titanic through.

One example is the set where they go to a town that is besieged by outlaws. Through the entire thing Twilight goes on about how she can't use her magic on Equestrian Citizens, though she does it with her friends all the time, even while they citizens in question are commiting crime after crime. Granted that would explain why the Royal Guard are so inept.
On the other end is the Nightmare Rarity one which my only complaint was the means of how they reached the moon. Though, while not really a complaint, I wonder if they really only chose Rarity as the one to fall as she is the one that would look prettiest out of them all with the color scheme. Applejack and Rainbow Dash would probably have bigger insecurities to exploit, the former as being the least useful of the group most times and the latter because of how her ego is used to cover them up.
Of course that's mostly on the Friendship is Magic side but the Best Friends ones seem to be a bit more solid for the most part, except for the whole animal talking one with Fluttershy since I'm pretty sure she already can understand them. While I'm still in the middle of reading this series, I actually think that parts of this one are much more usable than the other one without heavily editing to make them actually fit the story canon, let alone the cartoon canon.
Interestingly enough I find that G1 is easier to fit into my stories than the comics and I've already been leaking tidbits with the tagged story dealing with some of it. And just so the blog fits more with the tagged story, here's a few teaser words to try and pique interest. Funeral, Tomb, Meghan's Lament, Staff of Twilight. 
Edit: Got through a bunch more of the friend ones and they are much better storywise for usability. Though I already used Mina in my other story. 
Also an added little spolier: Boulder's true form. 
The comics are pretty average overall, in my opinion. There are 3 extremely stand out examples though. The arc with the mirror worlds, Sombra's redemption, and Luna's comic. Those three, in my opinion, are the high points so far.
