Classification of characters by appearance · 9:44pm Dec 12th, 2016

The roles are based in this chart I created a long time ago:

-Main: They are the main focus of the episodes and the main story revolves around them. Obligatory name change (Mane 6, Spike).

-Secondary: Mainly assist the protagonists of the story, their importance is as big as theirs and sometimes they can be the focus of an episode. Obligatory name change (CMC's, Celestia, Luna, Apple family [mainly Big Mac and Granny Smith], Royal couple [Shining Armor, Cadance], Starlight Glimmer [if we count the Equestria Girls films Sunset Shimmer fits here]).

-Tertiary: They have minor appearances in the episodes and can't be the main focus but their participation can be important depending on their class. These are the subclassifications:

Supporting- Appear very often in the series. They can help or harm the rest of the characters. No name change except for the most notorious ones (Cheerilee, Trixie, Zecora, Spitfire, Soarin, Flash Sentry, Gilda, Diamond Tiara, Silver Spoon, Chrysalis).

One-Shot- Appear in only one episode (maybe two if it's lucky) throughout the entire show to then make a journey into irrelevance (insert Silver Quill joke here) with some of them struggling to get out of this category. No name change with a couple of exceptions (Sombra, Tirek, Lightning Dust, Tree Hugger, Moon Dancer, Ember).

Guest Star- Normally voiced by a celebrity or a person unfamiliar with the show, appear once or twice per season and are more popular than most of the tertiary characters and unlike them, can be the main focus of the story. Obligatory name change (Discord, Coco Pommel, Cheese Sandwich, Maud Pie, Rara).

-Background characters: They decorate the scenery with their presence, do minor roles and never are the focus of an episode unless it's an special. No name change (Background 6).

You may wonder why I am I doing this? Well, you can say this is a scheme or diagram for the next story and how it's going to work. Depending on how often a character appears, it will be their roles into the story, they can appear for one or two chapters (and in caseof the main ones, the entire plot). Memorize this since I'm not going to repeat it once the story is out.
