Today, we celebrate one of the most beloved characters in all MLP. Although her appearances have been limited, she's definitely made her impact on the franchise and the fandom with attitude, looks, and overall adorableness. I'm of course referring to Sunset Shimmer, everyone's favorite bacon-headed unicorn/human.
In Equestria Girls, Sunset was the typical generic bully character. She had a good design and her past as Princess Celestia's former student was interesting, but she really didn't give the fans much to like. She was just Twilight's generic foil and that's it. No one was really talking about Sunset back, but everything changed when the Fire Nation attacked-I mean, when Rainbow Rocks came along.
Rainbow Rocks introduced us to a completely different Sunset Shimmer. Instead of the generic mean girl we got in the first movie, we see a sympathetic character trying her best to make up for her past sins only to fail at almost every turn until the end. Seriously, seeing Sunset trying to be helpful to the students she used to bully only to receive a cruel, unforgiving glare was pretty heartbreaking. Soon enough, I along with other found myself rooting for her to win. Seeing her earn (not just given) the respect of the other students was one of Rainbow Rock's greatest strengths that made us like the movie.
Friendship Games gave us mostly more of the same the student-respected Sunset, though I think that's nothing to complain about. Seeing her happy after first two movies is a good thing in my view. In this third movie, Sunset mostly just competes in the games while trying to learn more about the new magic and meeting the human Twilight. However, I think it's safe to say that Sunset's two most memorable moments in Friendship Games are Sunset's anger toward Sci-Twi after the motocross race, and her battle with Midnight Sparkle. In the former, Sunset scolded Sci-Twi for endangering her friends with powers she doesn't understand (and I don't blame her at all). That scene shows that while Sunset has come a long way, she still isn't perfect, and that's a good thing; it means she human (so to speak). She wouldn't be much of a character if she didn't make mistakes every now and then. Sunset's battle with Midnight made Sunset's progression in the EQG series come full circle; starting as the friendless villain, to earning her friendships, to finally ascend as the one who defeats the friendless villain with friendship (and a pseudo-alicorn human no less).
As for what the future hold for Sunset Shimmer, well we'll just have to wait and see. She's has a starring appearance coming up in Legend of the Everfree, and we'll see where that all leads to.
One thing that I and many others hope for is for Sunset to have an appearance in the Friendship is Magic TV series. With all her accomplishments in the human world, it'd be very interesting to see what Sunset would do if/when she returns to Equestria. Now, I understand that Sunset wouldn't just leave her best friends in human world, but that doesn't mean she can't visit, and hey, high school doesn't last forever. Two potential scenes that come to mind with the idea of Sunset visiting are Sunset reuniting with Twilight and a confrontation with Celestia. Now those scenes have some potential. Here's to hoping we see Sunset in Equestria someday, hopefully soon.
Another thing that I would personally like to see is Sunset return to Equestria and ascend to an alicorn (the one time I actually would support the show getting a new alicorn). With her being a former personal student of Celestia, Sunset was on the path to becoming an alicorn. It's only because of her greed and ambition that that didn't happen. However, now that Sunset has learned the values of friendship and even invoke the powers of the Elements of Harmony, I do think she has earned her crown. I'm not entirely sure what her title would be, but hey, Twilight didn't get an official title until a full season after she ascended. We can think of something

On my more fan fiction side, I love the idea of Sunset being in a romantic relationship Princess Twilight Sparkle (I say her full title as to not confuse her for Sci-Twi). SunLight is third favorite ship in all MLP. I find their chemistry very adorable. Their talk scene in Rainbow Rocks was the best scene in the movie and the catalyst for my SunLight shipping. Them messaging and supporting each other through the books is just cute. Other memorable moments I'd like to mention are their intro together Friendship Through the Ages, and the scene where Sunset meets Sci-Twi and thinks is Princess Twilight (Sunset's face

Well, that's about all I have to say about Sunset Shimmer today. She's a great character, too adorable, and is probably the main reason we enjoy the Equestria Girls movies. With how popular she is nowadays, it's hard to believe there was a time nobody cared about Sunset. I'm happy to see Sunset come so far. I hope to see plenty more of her in the future (that will hopefully include some appearances in the show), and I'll write plenty of more stories about her.
*On an unrelated note, I'm almost finished with the rough draft of my current story (sequel to Holiday Sunlight). As soon as that's done, I'll polish it a few times and post it. Shouldn't be too much longer now.
