4171544 I suspect you're right. Spruce came off as very confident, which in a modern story always means he's the bad guy unless he also has something wacky and slightly deflating happen to him in his introductory scene.
It's just like we know that Gaia Everfree is going to turn out to be a poor misunderstood dryad or something, and the real villain is Filthy Rich, because consumerism.
I'm humble. I'll settle for nearly any character development at all.
