"A Damn Long Time" Lyrics · 6:16pm Jun 17th, 2016
As you might recall in my blog a few days ago, I mentioned writing lyrics to an original song. I've tried my hand at song parodies of various forms before, but never an outright original song.
Naturally, since I'm posting it here, it is MLP related. My original thought was a song about Discord. But then suddenly a new chorus popped into my head and I wrote a song around it, which I will provide the full lyrics to below. Basically, it is from Discord's POV talking about his life, and his long (and tenuous) relationship with Celestia and others.
As far as genre, in my mind, it sounds like an alt-rock song. But I have a feeling it could be made metal too, if that is more your style. Since I can't sing metal, I could only work with how my voice naturally works. This is very skeleton, as I have no instruments at the moment to think of precise chord structure or what-not. Hopefully that will be a thing at sometime to where I could make a proper track.
Like I said, first attempt at something like this, so don't eviscerate me too badly.
“A Damn Long Time”
(Interlude/Opening)
I’ve been locked away for a thousand years.
Never would’ve thought that I would reappear.
Again.
(Riff A)
I went ahead and did the things that I do best.
‘Til you made it all a part of one big test.
My friend.
(Riff B)
You brought me back to life as part of your plan.
To see if I could be a good Equestrian.
Good luck.
(Riff A)
I once again allowed myself to do my best.
Fortunate for you, I was shown Kindness.
Shut up!
(Riff B)
(Crescendo and raising in pitch)
But through all of this, I know you always thought that!
You say I’m mad with power,
But I’m mad at myself.
Because all of this time,
I could’ve been someone else.
You locked me in a vault,
And it’s all of my fault (all of my fault).
But I promise to be good in my life.
And that’s a damn long time.
(Bridging interlude)
Chaos is defined as the end of order.
But there’s been one constant over and over.
It’s you.
(Riff A)
I never meant to end your royal run.
Just want the Sun and Moon to have some fun.
It’s true.
(Riff B)
Have I not proved myself a worthy friend?
Even when I went on that jealous bend?
My bad.
(Riff A)
There is so much more that I have to see.
And I can do it all while still being me.
I’m glad.
(Riff B)
(Crescendo and raising in pitch)
But through all of this, I know you always thought that!
You say I’m mad with power,
But I’m mad at myself.
Because all of this time,
I could’ve been someone else.
You’ve treated me well,
But I could just never tell (could just never tell).
And I’ll be with you for the rest of your life.
And that’s a damn long time!
(Bridging interlude)
Yes I tend to stray a little now and then.
But at least I’ve made myself a few good friends.
You win.
(Riff A)
Now I’ve gone and found a new purpose.
To find new ways to bring you a little happiness.
You’ll grin.
(Riff B)
I will confess that I like to see you smile.
Nice to know that I can do something worthwhile.
All day.
(Riff A)
It’s the little things that keep me going strong.
It’s so much better now that we get along.
We’ll stay.
(Riff B)
(Crescendo and raising in pitch)
And now I understand why you always thought that!
You say I’m mad with power,
But I’m mad at myself.
Because all of this time,
I could’ve been someone else.
We have a long time to go,
Best we enjoyed the show (enjoyed the show).
I knew nothing but chaos,
Had a nice, long ride.
But I’ll admit it’s better
Being by your side.
We have a long time to go,
Best we enjoyed the show (enjoyed the show).
And stand together for the rest of our lives.
And that’s a damn long time!
(Ending interlude)
I really enjoyed this!! <3
4029702 Thanks! Any particular comments or criticism?
I loved the flow. I could see this being sung in the same fashion as Discord by LivingTombstone.
Maybe a few of the rising pitch parts, they clash but not a lot. In all the flow is there and this was just wonderful! Can't say more then that.
4031862 Yeah, it's not the best bridge sequence, but I figured there needed to be some kind of tone shift between the verses and the chorus. Someone could probably come up with a better bridge than I did.
4036690 Still a good effort. You should be happy for yourself.
4036834 Trust me, I am quite happy with it. now my hope is that sometime in the future I can figure out the musical side of it, and try to produce a proper track out of this. Will be awhile for that, though.
4036858 I wish you the best of luck then.
If you do figure it all out, let me know and I'll make sure to check it out.
