It makes you take perks you probably wouldn't ever touch and makes you explore more. But I can't recommend survival mode enough. You'll get real good at making tactical decisions, running to safe spots, an locating enemies.
Survival mode also makes Preston Garvey your best friend since he helps you essentially find save points all over the Commonwealth xD
