Shadow of an Empire Progress Report + Other Reports · 6:50pm May 13th, 2016
Hey everyone! Just dropping you a quick update on how progress on the first draft of Shadow of an Empire is going, as well as work on getting Colony into Beta, so you all know what’s going on.
First, work has been slower these last few weeks, as you might have noticed or guessed. I’m putting in a lot of shifts at my other job to try and pull myself into some semblance of financial stability (and it’s working, thankfully, though it’ll be months before I can do more than make a $5 luxury purchase). Unfortunately, this means less time to write and edit, so my monthly production has been halved, from 80,000 words to a little over 40,000. Which would probably be less impactful if I was writing piddly little 50,000 word books like a lot of self-pubs rather than 150,000 plus juggernauts.
Anyway … that progress report, right!?
So, Shadow of an Empire has hit 145,000 words as of this last week. At the current pace, and looking at where I’m at in the story, I’ve got about another 80,000-100,000 words to go, which means that Shadow is two-thirds done!

Sorry, but my memory might be betraying me. Is Shadow the new Dusk Guard story, or are both of the stories you're talking about original fiction? And if Shadow is the Dusk Guard story, then could you tell us a bit more about what you meant by "new heroes, new magic system?"

No, the next DG story will be Hunter/Hunted. Shadow of an Empire is a fantasy-western epic that follows two people—Adjudicator-Lawman Salitore Amazd and Inquisitor Meelo Karn—across a desert known as the Outlands in pursuit of a prison train's worth of escaped prisoners. Shootouts, horseback chases, dirt, bullets, and, of course, a really sweet magic system wherein people can absorb and re-emit fundamental forms of energy like heat or light (and you can totally get a peek at the universe and how it works in Unusual Events.
Colony, on the other hand, is a Sci-fi Space Opera epic about three operators being thrown together (without too much choice) and sent to an alien colony world to track down a computer programmer. It's got submarine combat, power armor, lots of awesome guns, and some sweet action moments, plus a very neat mystery at the core.
There will be more fanfic coming in a short this summer, but right now I need to get more books published. And on that note, if you haven't been reading my published works, then consider this a plug. They're well worth it.
