So I started thinking of a new story last night; placeholder name Crucible of Shadows that might be pony, or might be in my entirely own verse on a different website.
Some sort of dark mage illusion school where the school itself is mostly an illusion. 15 professors work at the school. 5 of them are legendary arch mages who will teach you the secrets of magic, and 10 paid actors who have no idea what they're talking about. Sometimes the actors are given a lesson plan that's basically reading from a textbook, other times they're allowed to make up whatever secret history or magical beat biology they feel like, and get paid for every hour of student time that they waste. None of the lectures are obligatory, you choose who to listen to and if you can't tell the difference between an arch mage and an actor; you don't deserve to to take up the time of the arch mages.
There's also a few arch mages posing as students, (with illusion spells to make them look young etc), who are happy to befriend you and answer all your questions. There's also a some changelings/ sirens etc who are posing as students who would love to befriend you and slowly drain your magic and life force dry. If you can't make choose your companions wisely, you can't be trusted with great power.
Of course, the students aren't necessarily told any of this...
(This started as my interpretation of if Luna had a magic school; but all my current stories link together and although she has one... 'student'; there is definitely no school.)
