More Random Thoughts and Crap · 3:31am Feb 26th, 2016
So for once I got a story chapter up bright and early today - 8:30 a.m. my time and what do I get for it? Only ONE VOTE so far today (and it's nearly 12 HOURS LATER) and guess what? It was a fucking DOWN VOTE *sigh*
Sometimes I feel I can empathize with Sombra's murderous mood.
So after a doctor's visit, I went toy hunting at all the McDonald's Tale Weaver (my brony husband) had not hit in the San Fernando Valley thus far - and there aren't many left, lemme tell ya). He's looking to blow $s on plastic ponies (what brony isn't these days?). I snagged two new ones for his growing collection. Six down, two to go.
Also, I noticed that I have 36 followers as of today (YEAH! THANK YOU!!!) but NOT A SINGLE ONE of my stories has over 20 votes total to its name. That's weird to me. I mean, aren't we here to read stories? Why would someone follow me but not praise or piss on my writing? Strange.
Well, if you're waiting for me to write a story without Sombra in it, you know that picture of a skeleton at a keyboard waiting for his computer to load the Internet from a dial-up modem? Yeah. That.
After all my current story ideas run their course, I will branch out into writing Princess Luna into them, but guess what? They'll be ships of Luna and tall, dark, red-horned and pointy-toothed (i.e. Sombra).
At least that'll make the Lunbras happy (I hope. Actually I don't care if they're happy, it's MY obsession, dammit!!!). I waffle between being a Lunbra, but mostly these days, thanks to Evehly, I seem to be firmly entrenched in the Sombrashy camp. Hey, don't diss it until you witness it, man. It's SWEET! Real, fucking, true Beauty and the Beast business here!
Oh and I appear to be losing my sanity to Sombra's magics. I was proofreading my husband's story last weekend and he mentioned Sombra's defeat. I got incensed (pissed off). It was pure reflex, out of my control. Once I got my senses back after the initial emotion hit, I couldn't believe it. I mean, I know what the real world is and fantasy, but somehow my emotions failed to get the memo.
Crap baskets.
On the funny side of this, I took a pic a few weeks ago of a puddle of water outside OUR WINDOW. It kind of looked like Sombra's shadow. See the open jaw? The eye? Creepy, right? Creepier still that in an apartment complex with about 400 units, it found me.
Still, I refuse to give up the fandom and obsession.
At least not until I actually think I see him in my bed ala Topside's story A Shadow in the Night.
On second thought, if I see THAT, I'll give up reality instead.
Nyx
Although I tend not to pay too much attention to the ratings (I just write because I love to write ), I have noticed that when you have King Sombra in your tag, the ratings come up very slowly (unless you are one of the more popular author on the site), especially the upvotes and I think that's because the fandom as whole is still rather iffy about King Sombra, I still see people make those stupid Sombrero jokes or claim that all he said in the Crystal Empire two parter was "grarrr" and "crystals." Completely missing when he says "Ahhh crystal heart," "my crystal slaves," "That is mine," and finally "no stop!!". People still complain about his lack of screen time, when he actually got plenty of screen time and even when he wasn't on screen his very presence was felt throughout the episode two parter.
King Sombra has the unfortunate role of not being the bombastic or silly villain, the type of villain majority of people seem to prefer. So many are absolutely gaga about Discord (who I personally think is rather overrated) or Chrysalis (who I am also a fan of). No King Sombra is the deadly serious villain, he is the Pony Sauron and sadly many people just don't seem to like these kind of villains, calling them boring, no characterisation and things like that.
They complain knowing nothing about him, when the same can actually be said about both Discord and Chrysalis, seriously all we know about those two is that one wanted to cause chaos and the other wanted to feed her subjects. Just because someone is serious and no nonsense doesn't mean they lack personality, being serious and no nonsense is a personality, yes he isn't shouting one liners he isn't laughing like crazy at the drop of a hat, he isn't teasing the heroes because he has no time for such trivialities, he got a bloody Empire to get back.
That was not meant to get so long but this is a subject rather dear to me, I love serious villains, I don't mind the silly villains. I absoloutely love Hades from Disney's Hercules (Even if he's nothing like the Hades from the original myth), but I also love serious no nonsense villains like King Sombra. To see them dismissed as boring and having no personality just really bothers me, because it's sometimes like unless you're one-liner factory or utterly non-serious you don't have a personality and that kind of thinking just bothers me.
So yeah, that's my two cents on why when writing a King Sombra story, expect the ratings to come in slowly. Don't worry they will get there though, Possession used to have more dislikes than likes and now it has 11 up and 3 down, so it's just a matter of patience. Heck just yesterday the Tyrant got a surprise upvote.
You are right about the ratings!
Yeah, those sombrero jokes annoy me too, but sometimes I can laught them off.
I think that's ironic since people make fun of the villains that are bombastic or silly, saying they are unrealistic, so when faced with a villain who DOES act serious about his goals of taking back the Crystal Empire, they mock him. *shakes head* I think people just open their mouths and shoot them, off but don't really use their heads and THINK about what they are commenting on!
Oh no, I am glad you took the time. I love hearing a viewpoint so close to my own heart! Oh and I told Tale Weaver you like Hades too and he started singing his song from Hercules (we think he's AWESOME around here, too).
Heh, I think that "surprise upvote" was actually mine. I have been reading it off and on all week and really started getting into the swing of it and realized, "Hey, I haven't upvoted it yet and it totally deserves it!"
So, thanks for making me feel better and nudging me into remembering with us it's slow and steady wins the votes
3778161 You're welcome and glad you're enjoying the Tyrant as well. It is a different story than Possession even if it uses some of the same characters.
Thank you, Hail King Sombra. Just two more pony action figures to go. Hopefully I will pick them up this week.
