The Manehatten Series and Changelings. · 3:11pm Feb 21st, 2016
With regards to the notion of Changelings in my series, I don't think I need to go into extensive details about the fact that they're pretty much a stand in for whatever popular scapegoat demographic we have in the real world; it's something I plan to explore in more detail later, perhaps develop some backlash for some of my characters who stoked the flames for it later on, but at present it's neither here nor there, at least somewhat.
I think in the second story I plan to write, I think I'm going to make the issue regarding the demonization of the changelings a more pressing issue for the folks leading Manehatten to have to deal with: Otto has been greatly exaggerating issues regarding Changelings in Manehatten, when the reality is that, at least in this series, most of the changelings who aren't in the service of Queen Chrysalis simply want to try to get on peacefully with their lives: I don't subscribe to the notion of the Changelings as a hive mind race without any individuality of their own, though that itself could be a commonly shared rumour among ponies who don't properly understand Changeling society...
...However, I do think they're currently a race within Equestria who don't have any rights, however. Equines have rights, Bovines have rights, Felio-Avians (Griffins and Hippogriffs) have rights, but Changelings? First off, what kind of genus would you even put Changelings under? When we, as people in the real world talk about rights, it's quite easy for humans, because no matter what race, religion, sexuality or nationality we are, we're all HUMAN, so human rights is quite an easy concept to get around. Equestria though? It's a vast melting pot of different literal races. I expect that, back before so many different creatures lived in Equestria, the early kingdom would have Equine Rights. That would cover Ponies and Zebras, but little else; next would be 'The Bovine Amendment', which added the likes of Cows and Buffalo; then the Felio-Avian Amendment, which added Griffins and Hippogriffs: Really, this was a silly way for the Equestrians do it, and they should just made a bill of rights for Equestrians regardless of their race. However, ponies are clearly quite easily frightened folk, and so that would DEFINITELY explain the reason so many ponies still hate and fear Changelings to this extent.
...I think I want to make a Changeling OC, and have them be something of a representation of the Changelings in the City of Manehatten. The Manehatten authorities know about the Changelings living in the city, and have pretty much ghettoed them all off to the district of Goatham, a housing district of many fairly large tower blocks and somewhat less prosperous houses and shops; Ponies do live there, but the majority of folk are Changelings, living as ponies, roughly 8,000-12,000 in number. A lot, yes, but definitely not the floods and floods of changelings suggested by Otto's administration, especially in a city of around 3/4 million.
But I digress, Changeling OC. I just need a name, and to formulate something of a personality for the character as well.
